    6. 6 Board or Association? A Regulatory Board Is created by the legislature. Exists to protect consumers. An Association Exists to enhance the profession.

    7. 7 Application for Licensure

    8. 8 Application Packet You may download both the application and the statues and regulations from our website: www.ksbsrb.org

    9. 9 Application and Exam Fees The license application fee is $100. The examination fee is $230 and is payable to ASWB at the time you register for the examination.

    10. 10 Basic Requirements for Licensure At least 21 years of age. Good moral character. Pass the ASWB Exam at the masters level. A masters degree in social work.

    11. 11 Application for Licensure The application should be sent to the board office with all attachments included. If the board receives an incomplete application, it may be returned to the applicant. Applications are reviewed on a first come, first serve basis.

    12. 12 Transcripts The Board must receive an official transcript prior to your license being issued. This needs to be sent directly to the Board office from your university. The Board cannot accept transcripts that are not sent directly to us.

    13. 13 Your application will remain active for 1 year from the date it is reviewed. You may take the exam as many times as necessary during this 1 year period. You must complete ALL requirements prior to the expiration of your application.

    14. 14 This includes taking the exam, the board’s receipt of your exam score, and any paperwork being processed. This can take up to 4 weeks. AND Receipt of an official transcript, with your degree posted, sent directly from your university to the Board office.

    15. 15 Student Applicants You may apply up to 4 months prior to graduation. You will need to have the Dean complete the form entitled Verification of Academic Completion. (KU and WSU graduates are not required to complete this form. The university sends a list of expected graduates to the Board.)

    16. 16 References You need a total of 3 professional reference forms. 1 must be from your on-site practicum supervisor. The remaining 2 must come from licensed social workers or persons who are academically eligible for licensure, at or above the level of licensure, for which you are applying.

    17. 17 Association of Social Work Boards Examination (ASWB) Once your application has been reviewed and approved, you will receive notification from the board of your eligibility to sit for the ASWB examination which includes a candidate handbook. You will be approved for the appropriate examination needed for your level of licensure.

    18. 18 The Levels of the Examination Bachelors – LBSW license Masters – LMSW license Clinical – LSCSW license You will call the ASWB to register and pay for your examination. ASWB has a mandatory 7 day waiting period from the day you call and register to the day they will allow you to sit for the examination.

    19. 19 Testing Centers You may take the examination Monday through Friday at the following test centers: Hutchinson – Hutchinson Comm. College Liberal – Southwest KS Technical School Manhattan – Kansas State University Olathe – Olathe/RMI – ACT, Inc Wichita – Hutchinson Comm. Col/Wichita Saturdays are available at some testing centers.

    20. 20 The examination is given on the computer. You have 4 hours to complete the examination. When you complete your examination you will receive an unofficial score report. It can take up to 3 weeks for the board office to receive your official examination scores. (The board must receive them prior to your application expiration.)

    21. 21 ASWB Study Guide You may order a study guide through ASWB by calling 1-800-225-6880 or visit their website www.aswb.org The cost is $30. **Per ASWB policy, you must be authorized to sit for the exam before you may purchase a study guide.

    22. 22 Special Accommodations If you require special accommodations to take the examination, your request should be mailed directly to the ASWB, who will then contact the Board for approval. This must be completed prior to you registering for the exam.

    23. 23 If the Board does not receive an official transcript prior to your application expiration you will be required to re-apply. This applies even if you have passed your exam. We encourage you to contact the Board office if you have not received your license in 2 to 3 weeks after transcripts have been sent by your university.

    24. 24 Temporary Licensure Temporary license is available once application has been approved, applicant has graduated and transcript with degree posted has been received. A temporary license is valid for six months. No temporary license will be renewed. Only 1 temporary license will be issued, per level of licensure, regardless of number of applications filed with the Board.

    25. 25 Once You Receive your Social Work License

    26. 26 Social Work License All Social Work licenses will be issued for a two year period. All Social Work licenses expire on the last day of the month two years from the date of issuance.

    27. 27 Renewal of Licensure You will be required to complete 40 hours of continuing education per each 2 year renewal cycle. They must include 3 hours in Ethics. All masters level and above must include 6 hours in Diagnosis and Treatment.

    28. 28 Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker If you are interested in pursing specialist clinical social work licensure: If you are practicing in Kansas, you must submit a training plan for pre-approval in order to begin accruing hours toward the clinical license. You must complete all requirements and apply for the LSCSW before the Board will approve you to sit for the clinical exam. There is no fee to file a training plan.
