  3. Greek legend of Narcissus • Legend says that Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection in a pond.

  4. What is Narcissistic Personality Disorder?

  5. A condition in which people have an inflated sense of self-importance and an extreme preoccupation with themselves.

  6. Associated Features

  7. Many individuals diagnosed with NPD: • React to criticism with anger, shame, or humiliation • Have excessive feelings of self-importance • Exaggerate achievements and talents • In constant need of attention and admiration • Pursue many selfish goals

  8. Etiology • The causes/origin of this disorder are unknown. • May originate due to parenting problems or an extremely sensitive personality.

  9. Prevalence • Less than 1% in the general population • More frequent in males than females. (50% to 75%) • Most common in adolescents

  10. Treatment • There is no specific treatment • Psychotherapy may help the individual

  11. Prognosis • It depends on the severity of the disorder. • Most adolescents grow out of it, others sadly do not :(
