  3. Newbery Award The One and Only Ivan Katherine Applegate Harper Collins The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. Randolph Caldecott Medal This is Not my Hat illustrated and written by Jon Klassen Candlewick Press The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott.   5. Pura Belpre Award Martin de Porres: The Rose in the Desert Illustrated David Diaz written by Gary D. Schmidt Clarion Books The PuraBelpré Award, established in 1996, is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. Coretta Scott King Award Designed to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace, the Coretta Scott King Book Awards annually recognize outstanding books for young adults and children by African American authors and illustrators that reflect the African American experience.  Further, the Award encourages the artistic expression of the black experience via literature and the graphic arts in biographical, social, and historical treatments by African American authors and illustrators.   7. Charlotte Zolotow Award Each Kindness Jacqueline Woodson, author E.B. Lewis, illustrator Paulsen Books The Charlotte Zolotow Award is given annually to the author of the best picture book text published in the United States in the preceding year.
