  1. Globalisation Abbie, Amy, Molly, Emily and Saskia

  2. What is globalisation? • Globalisation is how the world is becoming interconnected as a result of massively increased trade and cultural exchange. Globalisation has increased the production of goods and services. The biggest companies are no longer national firms but multinational companies which are based all around the world. • Globalisation has been taking place for hundreds of years, but has speeded up enormously over the last half-century. • Globalisation has resulted in: • increased international trade • a company operating in more than one country • greater dependence on the global economy • freer movement of capital, goods, and services • recognition of companies such as McDonalds and Starbucks in LEDCs

  3. THE GOOD • Globalisation helps people become more aware of global issues such as deforestation and global warming • Globalisation brings wealth and foreign currency to local economies when they buy local resources, products and services • Globalisation is the sharing of ideas, experiences and lifestyles of people and cultures. People can experience foods from other countries which aren't previously available. • Globalisation increases awareness of events in far away places such as natural disasters

  4. THE BAD • Globalisation operates mostly in the interests of the richest countries, which continue to dominate world trade at the expense of developing countries. • Also, some wealth which is generated by large companies does not benefit all of the country in the same way. For example, some of the smaller parts of a certain county aren't improved. • Globalisation is a threat to cultural diversity (it drowns out local traditions and cultures) and masks them in modern westernised ideals. • Globalisation encourages dependence on other countries for essential goods and services.

  5. Genocide- a major effect of globalisation • WHAT IS GENOCIDE? • Genocide is the mass killing of a group of people which are usually of the same ethnic or have the same values. • HOW IS GENOCIDE LINKED TO GLOBALISATION? • Genocide is the systematic oppression of a group of people through economics, politics/legislation, warfare and globalization is basically the "destruction" of political/economic boundaries. This means that social conflict occurs and genocide can easily take place.

  6. GENOCIDE TIMELINE 1933 - The Holocaust- the mass murder of Jewish, homosexual, disabled and other ethnic origin people. 1975 - Cambodia- a genocide was carried out by the Communist Khmer Rouge in which one and a half to 3 million people were killed. 1982 - Guatemala- mainly fought between the mayan indigenous people and Latino peasants and various leftist rebel groups. between 140,000–200,000 dead and missing 1994 - Rwanda- massacre between the Tutsi and Hutu population, by the Hutu majority. better 500,000 and 1,000,000 killed. 1995- BOSNIA- The genocide committed by the Bosnian Serb. Between 8,000 and 9,000 recorded deaths.
