This document summarizes the proposed experiments and research initiatives focusing on phosphorus dynamics at Station ALOHA, based on ship traffic data around the Hawaiian Islands (2008-2009). Key topics include comprehensive inventories of dissolved and particulate phosphorus pools, diel studies on microbial population dynamics, and experiments investigating phosphorus limitation. The next meeting, scheduled for March 20-22, aims to discuss community interests in experiments, experimental design, core measurements, and potential collaborations among laboratories. Contact Karin or Kristina for participation details.

Proposed P-centric possibilities A) Comprehensive inventory of P-compound at Station ALOHA: - Dissolved and particulate pools (what can we tackle?) - 3-5 depths (to be determined) B) Diel studies: - Microbial populations dynamics - P-pool dynamics - “-omics” C) “forced” P-limitation/DOP utilization experiments: (on-deck incubations) - P-stripping with brucite (as BiG-RAPA) - nutrient enrichment (DSW, nitrate, ammonium) - biomass enrichment (bulk community, N-fixers)
Other proposed work A) Sediment trap array (PIT): High resolution depth profile (~12 crosses); type (live/dead/other) B) Direct measurements of alkaline phosphatase: Methods development (M. Saito lab) C) Trace metal concentrations: Daily surface sampling. One depth profile (E. Boyle via GC). This will include Zn D) Incubation experiments: SD/GC – trace metals and APase activity SD/KB/KD – group specific uptake of selected DOP compounds KF - microbial processing of material collected from the sed traps SD/SH – 2.5L and 20L on-deck incubations E) Some other: DdV –methylphosphonate metabolism studies SW – reduced gases, measuring of reduced P (PO3, methods development)
Next meeting(March 20-22??) • Discuss what experiments are of “community” interest • Discuss experimental designs • Determine core measurements needed • Discuss who/what lab responsible for what analyses • Cross-connections between labs/people –possible collaborations?
