  1. Delirium By Lauren Oliver Power Point by: Rachael Rich

  2. What kind of book is it? It has seemed in the past few months of my life that quality enticing books have fallen off the shelves. It has become increasingly difficult to commit myself to a read, none the less find myself a, what I believe to be, a good piece of writing! Recommended by a friend, I borrowed and started reading Lauren Oliver’s “Delirium Series,” and fell in love with all her books. Oliver has a keen way of writing metaphorically, (one of my favorites,) and describing to her audience in impeccable detail. These series of books are definitely for you if you enjoy picking up on the little things…and a little romance on the way.

  3. Should I read it? Continuing with my previous statements, I would like to add that this book is not a heavy book, and while it can be enjoyed by some high schoolers, it is also ideal for anyone in the middle school range. The vocab used is nothing more than any intelligent 7th grader can handle, so I believe it’s a great start to read. Also, keeping honest, many middle schoolers may be on a hunt to fill the void in their lives with some magical, movie-like, starstruck love…being surprised and enticed by what they find in this quite unusual love story.

  4. What’s It about? Delirium is a young adult novel about a young girl, Lena Haloway, who falls in love with a boy named Alex in a society where love is seen as a disease. A surgical cure for the disease has been created and is mandatory for everyone over the age of 18. The “love disease,” is known as deleria nervosa, and some symptoms include inability to eat, sleep, or concentrate; because the infatuation with that person consumes your mind; red face, sweaty palms, and uneasy/occasional vomiting stomach, whenever an “infected” person is near. The way Lauren continues to parallel the society’s idea of love, to her idea of love, captures the audience and captivates us to learn more, to learn anything we can. Twists and turns of life’s long asked question “What is love?” compel you to search in the very core of your being, ripped apart by what you believe. Love constantly hurts us, kills our hope, and defeats our optimism. So as a society, why should this go on? Why are we doing this to our people? Or, is love just like anything else in life, painful, but worth it; and does everything worth fighting for fight right back at you?

  5. From my own experiences, I can believe that this story can be read two different ways. Still an enjoyable love story by all, taken into account the symbolism and metaphoric terms, this book can be dissected and interpreted on a whole other level. “I run for I don't know how long. Hours, maybe, or days. Alex told me to run. So I run. You have to understand. I am no one special. I am just a single girl. I am five feet two inches tall and I am in-between in every way. But I have a secret. You can build walls all the way to the sky and I will find a way to fly above them. You can try to pin me down with a hundred thousand arms, but I will find a way to resist. And there are many of us out there, more than you think. People who refuse to stop believing. People who refuse to come to earth. People who love in a world without walls, people who love into hate, into refusal, against hope, and without fear. I love you. Remember. They cannot take it.” –Lena Haloway Quote With a Meaning

  6. Some of my favorite quotes from my reading: “The most dangerous sicknesses are those that make us believe we are well. ” “Everyone is asleep. They've all been asleep for years. You seemed ... awake.' Alex is whispering now. He closes his eyes, opens them again. 'I'm tired of sleeping.” “It's like a razor blade edging its way through my organs, shredding me, all I can think is: It will kill me, it will kill me, it will kill me. And I don't care.” “But it does not tell you this: that love will turn the whole world into something greater than itself.”

  7. How can I understand this? I simply love the previous quote, because most love stories these days are “cheesy,” and simply boring, yet Oliver has a way of turning love into a new perspective for young readers. Love is not kissing, it is fighting; love is not greedy, it gives all; love is not lust, it is freedom. Fighting for the ones you love, giving everything you have, and freeing yourself from the chains of human ignorance on this topic. Love is not something borrowed, or taken for a night, rather it is working, day in and day out for the greater good. Love can be towards a population, a race, or a people; it is not defined and captivated to one person only. Taking her quote into a deeper level, maybe hate doesn’t really exist, there is just an absence of love.

  8. Conclusion In conclusion, this book is a great read for young adults. If you’re a fan of the “John Green” traditional love stories, this one is sure to surprise you and keep you on your feet, wanting more from all three books. I encourage you to branch out and try it; it will be worth your while! (:
