  2. History and development of the industry: • * The forestry industry is the most important industry in B.C. • First nations people depended on the resource of the land, clothing, housing materials and tools. • This industry produces more jobs and wealth than any other industry. • First Nations people used the forest s to provide themselves food. • All during the fur trade the traders mainly used the forests to make log buildings. • On the coast most of the tall trees were used for masts on sailing ships. • In 1871 Canada entered Confederation, the coast had a established industry in logging and lumbering. • During the construction of the CPR in the 1880’s required mass amounts of timber and lumber for the constructions of the rail lines and bridges. • In 1887-1890 the forestry industry in B.C went into decline.

  3. How the industry works , the process involved, what products/ services are produced: • Logging is the process of cutting, skidding, and the loading of trees and logs onto large trucks. • Forests are ecosystems. • In 2008 Canada saved $ 30.2 billion dollars in forest products. • Also it gave around 274 000 jobs. • Products were sold such as newsprint, more paper, paperboard, wood pulp, and softwood lumber. • Around 80% of the products go to the U.S • The process of forestry is: • Technology-Production of cuttings- soil preparation-planting- maintenance- harvesting- transportation.

  4. how does the industry try to be sustainable: • By changing how they take trees.( selective logging) • Replanting the trees that were logged with new ones • B.C is a international leader in the sustainable forest management. • Strict forest management • Conserving soil. • Reforesting logged areas • Protecting areas • Planting of undergrowth

  5. what is the environmental impact of this industry: • They are cutting down timber faster than the forests can regenerate • Overcutting is taking away the resource for the world timber trade. • Overcutting causes the loss of the forest based livelihoods • Soil erosion is increasing dramatically • Flooding from the mountains • Raises the amount of the loss of species that live in the area of the logging • Destroying the habitats of the surrounding animals • Harmful to wildlife habitats • In the last few years a concern has grown about the sustainability of the forest. The interest has grown. Our air is being polluted more and more everyday and taking down. • The logging of old growth forests is very bad because environmentalists say the number of large intact watersheds led to B.C is insufficient. To ensure biological diversity they must be preserved. • Old growth trees take a very longtime to grow they take hundreds even thousands of years to grow.

  6. how much money does this industry generate: • British Columbia wood has been shipped all around the world since the 1800s. By the mid 1900's the value of all forestry products that were exported from British Columbia was $1.5 billion. Logging and manufacturing provide employment and provide more employment and contribute more value-added than any other industrial sector in B.C. Today this industry employs 30 000 people. • B.C’s forest industry has recorded a shipment of 9.1 billion dollars in 2009 • This industry makes millions and millions of dollars, around 600M per year

  7. the current issues and challenges of this industry: • Climate change • Animal extinction • Taking to many trees and not replacing the correct amount • Mass clear-cutting • Erosion • Land Slides • Subsidizing our logging industries • Old growth trees take a very long time to grow they take hundreds even thousands of years to grow. • Logging too much the next generation will grow slower, taking away from animals habitat • Extinction

  8. visuals, pictures, graphs, and diagrams to illustrate your industry:
