  1. How to help someonesuffering from seizures

  2. A seizure is a change in physical behavior caused by abnormal activity of the brain and in most cases is characterized by involuntary and uncontrollable shaking of the body.

  3. In some other cases it may simply be a brief blackout with temporary amnesia or frothing at the mouth, teeth clenching or sudden falling. Since, an episode of seizure may sometimes get violent and hurt the patient physically, it is important to take utmost care of the patient.

  4. If the patient has a history of frequent attacks, it is advisable to monitor patient’s health closely and get nursing care at home. Since a nursing attendant is well trained and knows how to deal with an emergency situation, he/she can provide the right care at the right time. Also, a home nursing attendant can assist with daily living activities of the patient.

  5. While health care at home is the best way to help patients suffering from seizures, here is a quick list of dos and don’ts that you can keep in mind to take care of somebody suffering from such a syndrome.

  6. Do’S

  7. Help the person lie down when he/she is experiencing such a violent episode and ensure that the space around is clear of any obstruction like furniture or sharp objects lest the person gets hurt • Cushion the head to prevent any injuries to it • Any tight clothing around the neck should be loosened • The person should be made to lie on his side so that fluid can easily leak out from the mouth. • Call for an expert if the seizure lasts for more than 5 minutes • Hire a long term nursing attendant if the patient has a history of recurrent attacks

  8. Don’ts

  9. Don’t stop the convulsions, as it is an involuntary act • Avoid putting undue pressure on the person’s mouth such as by inserting a finger because that may cause injuries like a broken tooth or fractures in the jaw • Don’t try to force any liquid through the mouth until the episode wanes • Don’t try to hold down the patient during the seizure attack • CPR should not be started until the convulsions subside or without the supervision of a trained professional like a nurse/ doctor

  10. Though they seem frightful, seizures can be taken care of with some understanding and patience. An expert’s help can be of extreme use in such a situation.
