  2. The term bypass indicates a new route that is surgically created within the heart to ensure flow of oxygen and blood to the heart. A bypass needs to be treated when the heart is blocked because of coronary artery disease (angina). A patient suffering from angina complains of discomfort and pain in the chest, which occurs because of restricted flow of oxygen rich blood to the heart. Patients complain of a pressure or squeeze in their chest, shoulders, arms, neck, jaw or even the back. This happens when a waxy substance called plaque forms on the inside of coronary arteries. In severe conditions dismay even form blood clots and cause death through heart attack. The only medical solution to this problem is bypass heart surgery, which is we already mentioned, creates a new to the heart.

  3. What happens during heart bypass surgery? As in the case with most cardiac surgeries, heart bypass surgeries begin with the patient receiving anaesthesia which renders them unconscious. Following that the patient is committed to a heart Lung bypass machine which acts as a stopgap apparatus to replace the hearts functions. This apparatus mixes blood and oxygen and keeps pumping it into the body while the surgeon proceeds to operate the heart. To access the heart, the surgeon usually cuts to the breast bone. A craft vein or artery stinging from different part of the body, initially from the leg – and then attached to the coronary artery on one end and to the aorta on the other end. Bypass surgery is a competitive procedure that takes approximately 5 to 6 hours depending on the expertise of the surgeon and condition of the patient. An average estimate of a bypass heart surgery is 6 to 7 hours. Patients are advised to be prepared for the procedure with adequate information beforehand.

  4. Recovering after operation in the ICU as with every critical operation, the patient is advised to recuperate in the intensive care unit after the surgery. Bypass heart surgery patients are kept in the ICU for about 24 hours during which several tubes inserted in the chest area to drain fluids. The patient is also advised not to get up from the bed and a catheter tube is attached for urination. By the size of the patient are monitored closely during the stay in the intensive care unit. In about a week’s time the patient is discharged and it takes about 4 to 6 months for the patient to see significant improvements in his or her health conditions.
