  2. Internet: A worldwide system of linked computer networks 3D Map of the World Wide Web This illustrates in 3-D the actual domains and connections of the world wide web. Colors have been added to represent .edu, .gov, .com, etc. domains. I've always seen the web as bubbles - some large, some small - and vectors - thick or thin. Internet Timeline • 1950’s • 1960’s • 1970’s • Sputnik launched • U.S. forms Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in the Department of Defense (DoD) • Early 60’s Theories and designs for “communications networks” developed • 1969 ARPAnet commissioned by DoD to protect flow of military information • Ray Tomlinson invents e-mail program • Tomlinson chooses @ symbol to tell which user was at which computer • 1973 First international connections to ARPAnet • 1979 “Emotions” in e-mail began, :-) and :-(

Military only network, MILnet, started due to increased public access to the network • Domain Name System introduced • CERT, Computer Emergency Response Team is formed in response to major internet worm • 1990 ARPAnet no longer exists • Early 90’s Businesses and media start to notice the internet • 1993 First version of HTML is published • Internet access now available through online dial-up systems (Compuserve, AOL, Prodigy) • U.S. telecommunications companies lobby congress to ban internet phones • 2000 Fear of computer failures mark beginning of the New Year • Mid 2000’s Blogging becomes popular • 1980’s • 1990’s • 2000‘s
