  1. Moon Unit Workup1st pass Lafever 1 December 2006 Robin Lafever LBNL

  2. This is a first-pass summary of the gross modifications and additions to the basic SNAP Telescope to perform operations on the Moon. The proposed subsystems have been grafted onto the existing S-21 Concept Model. In order of appearance: • Launch Vehicle Lots more mass aboard, bigger payload • Second stage Needs to deliver SNAP into Lunar trajectory • Spacecraft Needs bigger engine(s), lots more fuel. Big delta V changes at Lunar orbit, Lunar deorbit, Lunar landing. • Deployable landing gear Also the Observatory platform • Gimbaled High-gain antenna Follows the earth • Pop-top lid • Deployable Radiator • Lazy-susan Provides Azimuth tracking for Sun shade and Solar panels • Hexapod mount Provides Star tracking Robin Lafever LBNL

  3. Launch Vehicle • Lots more mass • More mechanisms • More fuel • Bigger engines • MoonUnit-4 is shown here on a Delta-4 Robin Lafever LBNL

  4. Lots more mass • More mechanisms • More fuel • Bigger engines • MoonUnit-4 is shown here on a Delta-4 • Need a Second Stage engine appropriate to deliver SNAP to the Moon Robin Lafever LBNL

  5. Second Stage Engine • Need a Second Stage engine appropriate to deliver SNAP to the Moon Robin Lafever LBNL

  6. Enhanced Spacecraft • Needs bigger propulsion unit and LOTS more fuel • Probably a Bi-prop system • Big changes in Delta V at the Moon • Going into Lunar orbit, • Braking for descent, and • Maneuver and landing • ( Pat has numbers ) Lots more fuel Pat says “not enough” Bigger engine Robin Lafever LBNL

  7. Deployable Landing Gear • Landing gear deploys and takes up landing loads. • Auger feet anchor the MoonUnit to the Lunar surface • The landing rig is now the telescope platform Robin Lafever LBNL

  8. Deployable Landing Gear • Landing gear deploys and takes up landing loads. • Auger feet anchor the MoonUnit to the Lunar surface • The landing rig is now the telescope platform Robin Lafever LBNL

  9. Deployable Landing Gear • Landing gear deploys and takes up landing loads. • Auger feet anchor the MoonUnit to the Lunar surface • The landing rig is now the telescope platform Robin Lafever LBNL

  10. Gimbaled High-gain antenna • Gimballed High-gain antenna finds, then tracks Earth within a small oval. • (numbers available) Robin Lafever LBNL

  11. Deployable Radiator Robin Lafever LBNL

  12. Deployable Radiator Robin Lafever LBNL

  13. Deployable Radiator Robin Lafever LBNL

  14. Flip-top cover • Perhaps not so trivial. • It has to land where we want it to land Robin Lafever LBNL

  15. Lazy Susan azimuth ring • Azimuth ring allows the Baffle to track the Sun • Solar panel always points Sunward. • Radiator is always in the Telescope shadow. • Baffle turns ~ 12 deg/day, every day. • Telescope completes a 360 turn in ~30 days Azimuth Ring Robin Lafever LBNL

  16. Hexapod pitch / roll / yaw • Hexapod provides 6 deg-of-freedom articulation. • Pitch, Yaw, and limited Roll are all used in sky tracking • Piston and translation are also available Robin Lafever LBNL

  17. More graphics • Turning, on the Moon • Turning, on the Moon, another one • Turning, one more. • Deploy landing gear • Deploy Antenna • Deploy radiator • Pitch / Yaw • Pitch / Yaw again • Rotate • Rotate, again Robin Lafever LBNL
