  1. Wallace and Murray

    Early rebellions against Edwards rule
  2. The story After capturing Balliol King Edward I carried out the following: Demanded that Scottish nobles sign the ‘Ragman roll’ Appointed the Earl of Surrey as Governor of Scotland and Hugh Cressinghamas treasurer Englishmen were appointed as sheriffs in places like Stirling and Lanark to keep law and order John de Warenne Hugh de Cressingham He was hated by the Scots and did not seem well liked even by the English. He was an advisor to John de Warenne, He returned to England a few months after he arrived claiming that the Scottish climate was bad for his health
  3. “Sire, at the time when this letter was made, nor previously, from the time when I left you, not a penny could be raised in your realm of Scotland by any means until my lord the Earl of Warenne shall enter the land and compel the people of the country by force and sentences of law” (Letter from Hugh Cressingham to Edward 1st 1297) Hugh De Cressingham Cressingham was the public face of the new alien regime His job was to establish an English-Style taxation system with a strong central government He soon met resistance and difficulties
  4. Rebellion in the South and West Under these circumstance it is not surprising that rebellions began to spring up around the country Western isles South West Using page 32 in the textbook, fully describe the rebellions that took place in Scotland and what happened after 10mins
  5. His contribution has often been overlooked but his rebellion was probably more successful than Wallace's Rebellion in the North Who was Andrew de Murray? The son of Andrew Murray of Petty (King John’s Justicar of Moray) His father was one of John’s most trusted and loyal supporters Sir Andrew snr held considerable political influence in the north & was Brother-In-Law to John Comyn of Badenoch Young Andrew had been taken captive at Dunbar and had been transported to Chester castle to be held for ransom – he escaped & made his way home (his lands were being held by an English Garrison)
  6. For the English chroniclers he was an outlaw, a murderer, the perpetrator of atrocities and a traitor. Rebellion in the South Who was William Wallace? Wallace was the younger son of a Scottish knight and minor landowner Conflicting birth dates: 1260, 1267, 1272 He had two brothers Malcolm & John (both of who are widely documented & fought in the war against Edward) He was educated, possibly by his uncle – (a priest at Dunipace) - who taught him French, Latin and Greek. Possibly - Sir Malcolm Wallace of Elderslie Possibly – Alan Wallace of Ayrshire Why do we know so much more about Andrew de Murray than William Wallace? Some historians argue that he must have been a mercenary, but it is more probable that he was simply an outlaw. Most of what we know comes from blind Harry’s poem written 170 years after his death
  7. 15mins How did the rebellion begin? In 1296 Scotland had been conquered. Beneath the surface there were deep resentments. Using page 36 -39 in the textbook answer in as much detail as you can: How did the Rebellion in the South begin and why? (give both possible explanations) What part did Robert Bruce, Bishop Wishart and the Steward have to play in Wallace's rebellion? Give evidence to support your answer Describe the reasons why Andrew Murray rebelled and the attempts to capture him
