  6. Science in a Changing World • Public thrust in quality and safety of food and the environment has decreased • Independency of scientific research is questioned • Consumers perception of uncertainties and risks should be addressed • Strategic science must be focused on environmental and socio-economical impact

  7. Structure of Risk Analysis (FAO/WHO) • Risk Assessment • Hazard identification • Hazard characterisation • Exposure assessment • Risk characterisation • Risk Management • Risk evaluation • Option assessment • Option implementation • Monitoring & review • Risk Communication • Anticipate emerging health hazards • Determine public concerns • Analyse target groups • Dissemination • Education/training

  8. Risk Analysis and Communication Models • Adequate in a changing world? • How can science contribute? • Better focus on socio-economical and environmental impact in strategic agricultural research

  9. Debate on Genetically Modified Food Crops . Species barriers are crossed and unknown effects Impact on the environment Can we test the safety of GM-foods adequately Are test procedures strict enough/uniformly applied Traceability, labelling and GM-free foods Contribution to a sustainable agriculture Whose interest . . . . . .

Rinforzare coordinamento progetti multi-disciplinari 4. Integrare ricerca sul livello Europeo (networks, tendering systems, KP6) 5. Mettere in evidenza l’aspetto “consumers” (Social needs, Risk-benefits, Precaution, Sustainability)

  24. INTEGRATING RISK ANALYSIS AND TRUST Political Control and Choice Inquiry and Evidence Management Strategy Review process Risk communication criteria Risk management Monitoring and Evaluation Risk assessment Public concern Decisions Monitoring and Evaluation criteria Social impact management Social impact assessment- Approach: Expert panels, Citizen’s juries, Depth surveys, Focus groups etc. Barling et al.
