  1. Dinosaurs Where did dinosaurs come from? ●Dinosaurs were reptiles that live millions of years ago. ●Some scientists believe dinosaurs were ancestors of amphibians(frogs, salamanders) ● Over millions of years some of them may have developed into animals with stronger skeletons, tougher skin and hard eggs.

  2. How long ago did they live? • Dinosaurs lived during the Mesozoic Era, which is also called the AGE OF REPTILES. • The history of the earth is divided into eras, or time periods. • Triassic Jurassic Cretaceous MESOZOIC ERA 245 million Years ago 65 million Years ago 208 million Years ago 144 million Years ago Period Period Period

  3. Where did dinosaurs live? • Most dinosaurs lived on land and walked with their legs under their bodies (not out to the sides like alligators) • Many different kinds of dinosaurs lived on every continent.

  4. How Big Were Dinosaurs? • Some dinosaurs were extremely big, while others were small.

  5. Three Types of Dinosaurs • Carnivores-meat-eaters • Herbivores-plant eaters • Omnivores-meat and plant eaters

  6. T-rex Carnivores • Meat-eating dinosaurs were carnivores that hunted other animals for food. • The meat eaters had long, strong legs so they could run fast. • They also had strong jaws and sharp teeth and claws to tear apart their catch. • Only 35% of dinosaurs were meat-eaters

  7. Herbivores • Plant-eating dinosaurs were herbivores that ate only plants. Plant-eaters had many features on their bodies that helped them eat. • Some had blunt snouts, or beaks for stripping leaves and twigs. • Some had pouches in their cheeks in which they stored food before eating it. • 65% of dinosaurs were plant-eaters.

  8. plateosaurus Omnivores • Plant-eaters and meat-eaters dinosaurs were omnivores that ate both plants and meat. • There were only a few known dinosaurs that were omnivores. • These dinosaurs would eat plants, eggs, insects, etc. • Almost all dinosaurs were “accidental omnivores” they would accidentally ingest many insects and other small animals.
