  1. Debates Academy

  2. Aims: • Be forerunner for debates culture • Set benchmark in debating skills; coaching and adjudication • Be consultant in local scene, i.e. help with setting up debates clubs and organising competitions. • Run as non academic, in sync with building vision of leading independent entity with strong regional network.

  3. Programmes Workshops and trainings: • Accreditation of Judges/Adjudicators • Training/Accreditation of Coaches, an immediate concern among schools. Strong RI alumni provision; with possible link up with WSDC. • Intro to alternative styles of debating for vibrancy and variety.

  4. Alumni Mentoring for current debaters. • Content Enrichment through seminars and panel discussions on current affairs for differing perspectives and discourse.

  5. Networking and Signature event • International networking and tie-ups through invitational of international speakers/judges/workshop coordinators at events like clinics tailored to our needs/objectives. These are open to other schools’ debates clubs, possibly at nominal admin fee. • Signature event: Distinguished Speaker Series to showcase good speaking styles and rhetoric. This will also be open to debates community. However, will not be like RI lecture or Ambassador Series where whole school attends. Will focus on interest groups.

  7. Competitions • Regional Friendly Competitions as pre run-up to WSDC and network with neighbours like Indonesia, Thailand, Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, etc. • Inter-Primary schools competitions will continue but will try for bigger platform / scale.

  8. Advisory Panel • Set up Panel of Fellows, Alumni and non Alumni of Raffles Debaters. • Committee of students from CCA arm (from both secondary and jc) to assist.

  10. Time Line • Original date, this month starting off with Speaker series but H1N1. possibility now early 2010. • Has announced to primary schools at September workshop. • Regional competitions likely later half of 2010, after WSDC/Qatar. Sound out end 2009, confirm Feb 2010.

  11. Budget Start with $35000 pa: flights, board and lodgings, honorarium/fees of speakers/consultants. Logistics like Programme printing and publicity: Regional Competition: $15000 International Trainers: $10000 Primary Competitions: $2000 Distinguished Spk series: $5000 Miscellaneous/ope costs: $3000
