  1. Drawing in 3d In this project you will develop your 3D drawing skills Using these skills and some imagination/research you will create your own sci-fi Art. You will also construct 3d shapes to be used for observational drawings.

  2. Inspiration for this project

  3. How to get started We use tone (shading) to make shapes 3D. Objective 1 use a compass to draw a circle with a 3cm diameter and use tone to turn it into a sphere. We are going to then construct 3D shapes and draw them from observation.

  4. Paper Templates for 3D shapes Objective 2. Simply cut out and glue the edges. Objective 3. Place the completed shapes in front of you and draw them from observation in 3D

  5. More complicated shapes OTF. If you have time you could make more complicated shapes and draw them.

  6. How could you make these?

  7. Basic sci-fi shapes If you are finding this really hard don´t worry. Some of the most well known Sci-Fi creations are very simple shapes and would be easy to make and draw.

  8. Part 1 Objectives Success Criteria Bronze, basic drawings complete with some tone. Drawings appear 3D Silver, angles and perspective in observational work is correct. Gold, full range of tone, complete perspective and a challenging observational composition. Challenge, further work completed including Sci Fi elements. • Convert shapes into forms and add full range of tone. • Construct forms from paper templates. • Produce observational drawing of geometric forms.

  9. Homework You will need to produce an A4 pencil drawing of a geometric household object. The object should be an interesting form and 3D. You should use a full range of tone. These drawings will be used later to create Sci Fi artwork.

  10. Part 2 Objectives Success Criteria Bronze, simple form designed and constructed. Simple Photograph. Silver, complex construction, clearly based on observation. Gold, independent Sci Fi research produced and used in design. Photography clearly demonstrates an understanding of perspective. Challenge, The model is completed in full colour, with details. • Produce a design for a Sci Fi Form based on your observational homework and previous drawing. • Construct the design in cardboard. • Create Sci Fi composition using your models. • Photograph compositions.

  11. Cardboard buildings

  12. Cardboard spaceships

  13. What can we make with cardboard? Artist inspiration MopnamiOhno

  14. How would your start to produce sculptures like these? On your tables you will design and create some buildings, spaceships, robots or other Sci-Fi creations. This will be used to create a scene that you will Photograph. All sculptures should be 30cm or smaller.

  15. Perspective • The term perspective refers to the representation of objects in three-dimensional space (i.e. for representing the visible world) on the two-dimensional surface of a picture • Objective . Draw out 1, 2 and 3 point perspective. A5 size each. If you finish the basic drawing then add tone.

  16. One point perspective

  17. Part 3 Objectives Success Criteria Basic sketches of perspective and basic composition for final piece. Silver, Complete perspective sketches including tone. Gold, Sketches will have Sci Fi details. Challenge, Complete use of perspective and details in final composition, demonstration of technical abilities and creativity. • Demonstrate understanding of perspective by producing sketches. • Use what you have learned and your photography to produce a final piece with perspective.

  18. Texture Colour

  19. Artist Inspiration Chris Foss

  20. Where does the light come from?

  21. How would you describe his painting style? Composition? Tone? Texture? Colours?

  22. Glenn Brown painting 2001/Anthony Robert illustration 1974

  23. Artist Inspiration John Harris As we look through these what differences can you see in the style of this work compared to the work of Chris Foss? Composition, Tone, Texture and colours?

  24. There are more interesting colours to use for space than just black

  25. Part 4 Objectives Success Criteria Bronze, work produced in full colour with some tone. Silver, full tonal range, details in pencil. Gold, visible influences from artists, excellent technical skills. Challenge, completely realized Sci Fi artwork. Demonstrating advanced skills, understanding and creativity. • Base colour washes using watercolour. • Mixing colours for full tonal range. • Details in coloured pencil. • Some paint if necessary.
