  1. Peyote By Scott Beadles

  2. Peyote is a small spineless cactus native to northern Mexico and the American southwest. The peyote cactus contains the power hallucinogenic drug mescaline.

  3. Due to the inhospitable arid environment in which it grows the peyote cactus will often grow in the shade of another cactus or adjacent shrub, for moisture retention purposes. From seed to a plant reaching full maturity ready to be harvested, can take from 10 to 13 years.

  4. Harvesting of the peyote cactus the desired portion is the disc shaped appendage at the top of the cactus. It is know as the “crown” or “button” of the plant. This is the portion that contains the sought after ingredient, mescaline. Proper harvesting of the buttons will leave the roots in a position to remain productive capable of regenerating new crowns.

  5. Allowing the water to dry will raise the concentration of the mescaline. • A raw button will contain 0.2%-0.3%. • A dried button will contain 5%-6% pure mescaline. • Once the buttons are harvested the ideal measure taken is to dry them before they are ingested.

  6. Ingestion Methods Dried buttons are eaten with a chaser to counter the bitter taste, usually a fruit juice. Dried buttons are steeped in water and mixed with herbs creating an intoxicating beverage.

  7. Effects • Consumption of peyote will release and stimulate the serotonin receptors in the brain. • The drug will have influence over the central nervous system which is involved in the regulation and interpretation of, sight, sound, smell, touch, hearing and taste. • The serotonin neurotransmitter plays a role in the regulation of, anger, aggression, mood, sleep cycle, and sexuality.

  8. Release of Serotonin • Once the drug has been introduced, a barrier is formed at the synaptic cleft allowing the serotonin to pool and left to be absorbed. • In the absorption, the user is exposed to levels of serotonin not naturally available. • The result of the flooding and absorption produce profound distortions in time and reality.

  9. Release of Dopamine • Along with the release of serotonin, the ingestion of mescaline will trigger a release of dopamine. • Dopamine plays a huge role in reward driven learning producing feelings of euphoria and is a natural analgesic. • This influx of dopamine will produce reward seeking behavior.

  10. Acute Effects • Altered states of perception and feeling • Nausea • Euphoria • Increased body temperature • Increased heart rate • Increased blood pressure • Dilated pupils • Loss of appetite • Tremors • Nausea • Vomiting

  11. Chronic Effects • Anxiety • Flashbacks • Hallucinogen persisting perception disorder • Depression • Psychological distress

  12. Addiction • Mescaline can be habit forming but is not considered physiologically addictive. • A dependence to mescaline is considered to be strictly psychological. Directly related to the release of dopamine , a dependence will occur when the user develops an emotional and mental attachment to the drug and must continue to use in order to satisfy the craving.
