  1. Air Conditioning EPA Core

  2. Effects of Ozone Depletion • Skin Cancer • Cataracts • Crop loss • Immune system deficiencies.

  3. Stratospheric Ozone Depletion • Located 10 – 30 miles above the earth • Ozone consists of 3 oxygen atoms • Ozone depletion ---- Global Problem • Ozone Layer located in stratosphere.

  4. Chlorine • Depletes the Ozone • Forms chlorine monoxide when chlorine atom meets ozone molecule • 1 Chlorine atom can destroy 100,000 ozone molecules • Atmospheric life can be 100 years.

  5. Refrigerants • CFC--- Chlorine, Fluorine, Carbon (R-11, R12) • HCFC--- Hydrogen, Chlorine, Fluorine, Carbon (R22) • HFC--- Hydrogen, Fluorine, Carbon (R134a).

  6. Refrigerant uses • Heating • Cooling • Foam blowing agents • Cleaning solvents.

  7. CFC Production Ceased on DEC. 31, 1995

  8. July 01, 1992 No Venting of CFC’s & HCFC’s

  9. The Three R’s • Recovery • To Remove refrigerant in any condition and store it in an external container without testing or processing it • Recycle • To Clean refrigerant by oil separation with a single or multiple passes through replaceable core filter dryers.

  10. Reclaim • To reprocess refrigerant to new product specs by means which may include distillation and chemical analysis.

  11. Recovery Cylinders • Grey bodies with yellow tops • Hydrostatically tested and stamped every 5 years • Filled to 80% capacity • Evacuate the cylinder prior to its first use.

  12. Montreal Protocol A document calling for controls on CFC and HFC refrigerants

  13. ODP • Ozone depletion potential • R134a 0 ODP • Global Warming Potential.

  14. Venting • Releasing refrigerant • 3 Types of permitted releases • De Minimus • Normal operation • R22+Nitrogen / Leak testing.

  15. Recovery Equipment • Tested under ARI 740 • $27,500 per fine per day • $10,000 Reward.

  16. Blended Refrigerants • Blend fractionation • When the blend refrigerant leaks in uneven amounts due to different vapor pressures • Azeo tropic blends---500 refrigerants • Zeotropic refrigeratns---400 refrigerants.

  17. Leak Testing • EPA—125psig • General area ---- electric or ultrasonic • Pinpoint---- Bubbles.

  18. No Drop in Replacement for R12

  19. Safety Classifications A1 Most Safe ----almost all refrigerants A3 Least Safe B1 Toxic------R123 B3 Most Toxic.
