  2. What is Critical Thinking? • Critical thinking is the disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information, as a guide to understanding and action.

  3. The Critical Thinking Process • Utilizes Inference to: • predict outcomes • develop interpretations • support ideas • identify meaning • connect topics

  5. Join us in Assessing Critical Thinking • CTAC is seeking 15 to 20 faculty members from across campus disciplines to volunteer to pilot a critical thinking assessment plan in the Fall 03 semester.

  6. We’ll Use Two Types of Assessment Instruments • Standardized Testing • Produced, validated, scored and analyzed by a test publisher. • Primary Trait Analysis • A classroom based analysis of a main feature of an assignment using a locally produced rubric.

  7. The Test of Everyday Reasoning will be our Standardized Test • Published by California Academic Press • 35 questions about everyday situations that supply information needed to reason to correct answers • Sub-scores will provide measures of demonstrated ability in three main areas of CT:inference, analysis, andevaluation

  8. Rubrics Will be Used for Our Primary Trait Analyses • CTAC has developed rubrics that can be used by faculty to assess inference, analysis, and evaluationskillsin written and verbal assignments. • These rubrics include definitions, outcomeskills, and question cues. • CTAC will assist faculty in designing user friendly assignments that focus on these three areas of CT as applied to your discipline.

  9. Faculty Participating in Our CT Assessment Plan • Will administer the 45 minute long, standardized Test of Everyday Reasoning near the beginning of the semester. • And will use the inference, analysis, and evaluation rubrics to assess 3 classroom based assignments of their own design during the semester.
