  1. Drifting From the Gospel Hebrews 2:1-4 January 25, 2015

  2. Hebrews 2:1-4 • Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

  3. Reminders… • Written like a sermon • Doctrine (truth) and exhortation (applying the truth) • Big shelf: Jesus is better! • Chapter one: Jesus as Mediator is better than OT mediators. • Better than prophets (1:1-2) • Better than angels (1:4-14)

  4. Acts 7:52-53 – (Stephen speaking) - Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it." Galatians 3:19- Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary.

Outline of the Text • A Warning – 2:1 • A reliable message – 2:2 • A great salvation - 2:3a • A Confirmed Salvation - 2:3b-4 The big idea: Drifting from the truth of the gospel can happen to any one of us. A true believer guards his affections (heart and mind), so that gospel drift does not occur.

  6. 1. A Warning (2:1) Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. It is a warning: • It is given to Christians • If is given for edification • It is given as a corrective

  7. A specific duty • “we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard.” • Reverent and ready obedience • Don’t squander the benefits of what you have heard. • A warning: “lest we drift from it.” • Drift away – nautical term • Problem – Drifting is gradual

The Reliable message (v. 2) For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, Message declared – published, preached, proclaimed The message – reliable or trustworthy Transgression – Refusal to follow the Law Disobedience – Refusal to heed the Law Just retribution – “correct punishment”

  9. Numbers 15:27-36 "If one person sins unintentionally, he shall offer a female goat a year old for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement before the Lord for the person who makes a mistake, when he sins unintentionally, to make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven. You shall have one law for him who does anything unintentionally, for him who is native among the people of Israel and for the stranger who sojourns among them. But the person who does anything with a high hand [defiantly NIV], whether he is native or a sojourner, reviles the Lord, and that person shall be cut off from among his people. 31 Because he has despised the word of the Lord and has broken his commandment, that person shall be utterly cut off; his iniquity shall be on him."

  10. 32 While the people of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation. They put him in custody, because it had not been made clear what should be done to him. And the Lord said to Moses, "The man shall be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp." And all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death with stones, as the Lord commanded Moses.

A great salvation (2:3a) • how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? • 1:3 – Jesus is keeping everything together • 2:5 – restoration of the glory • 5:9 – Jesus did everything for your salvation • 7:25 – This salvation is eternal, heavenly, everlasting • 9:28; 10:39 – All benefits fully realized

A Confirmed Salvation (2:3b-4) • It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. • Three messengers • The Lord Jesus • Those who heard (Apostles) • God himself

  13. Conclusion • Truth was spoken in love • Given with a solid doctrinal foundation • Lesser to greater: Law – Jesus • Just punishment • More light means more responsibility • Warning to those who had heard the gospel Titus 2:14 says Christ “gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.”
