  2. Project Motivation • Industrial design student James Paulius • Incorporating cycling and public transportation • Need: To have additional accommodations for cyclists to store their bicycles while riding on public transportation buses

  3. Project Description • Design and implement a bicycle rack that can be mounted to the currently unused space on the rear of a commuter bus • This rack can supplement the current rack mounted on the front of a bus • This rack can be retrofitted onto currently running buses

  4. Project Goals and Scope • Proof of concept • Rack deliverable • (1) Arm unit • Associated controls • Mirror vision system • Additional deliverable • Mounting stand • Testing • All deliverables will be tested to demonstrate their proper functioning

  5. Budget • The budget request for completing this project will be $600

  6. Desired Staffing • Electrical Engineer (2) • Communication • Control panel • Feedback systems • Motor and power source sizing and selection • Mechanical Engineer (2) • Rack • Mounting system • Fatigue and stress analysis • Material selection

  7. Additional Support • Faculty champion • None • Contacted Dr. W. Walter (ME) and Dr. F. Sahin (EE) • Customer • None • Was informed that Mr. J. Schull would act as our customer • He is unwilling to do so, but is willing to help establish a contact at RGRTA for this position

  8. Feasibility Analysis • Motor sizing • Motor must be powerful enough to lift the arm with bicycle attached • Suitable motor • McMaster P/N 6470k72 • 1/17 hp. DC gearmotor • Arm stress • The stresses seen by the arm cannot exceed the arm material’s yield strength • Suitable material • McMaster P/N 8457k27 • 0.5” OD stainless steel tube

  9. Summary • Commuter Bus Vertical Rear Bike Rack • MSD 1: 2012-2 • MSD 2: 2012-3 • Zachary Kirsch
