Understanding Line Plots: Analyzing Data with Outliers, Clusters, and Gaps

In this lesson, we explore the concept of line plots as a method for visualizing data distribution. A line plot represents the frequency of data points along a number line, helping to identify trends. We will focus on crucial terms such as range, clusters, and gaps. Using examples from test scores and cactus heights, students will create line plots to detect outliers, clusters, and gaps within the data. As a homework assignment, students will complete Exercise #1-8, reinforcing their understanding of line plots in data analysis.

  1. Mystery Number • I am less than 150 and greater than 100. • I am divisible by 7 and 5. • What number am I? • 105 or 140

  2. Lesson 2-3 Line Plots

  3. Line Plot • One way to show how data are spread out is to use a line plot. A line plot is a diagram that shows the frequency of data on a number line. An “x” is placed above a number on a number line each time that data value occurs.

  4. Line Plot • You can make observations about the data from a line plot. Range: difference between the highest and the lowest number in the data. Cluster: data that appear to group together. x Gap: large space in data. x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 Outliers are separated from the rest of the data
