  1. WATER Water Pollution

  2. Water Pollution What is water pollution? + Supplies of water that have been polluted by human activities, and are no longer usable! Water pollution can be classified into two main categories: point sources and non-point sources

  3. Point sources Where pollutants are discharged from specific locations Ex) drain pipes, ditches, or sewer outfalls. Factories, power plants, sewage treatment plants, underground coal mines, and oil wells are major producers of point source water pollution.

  4. Non-point sources When water pollution is scattered, having no particular location where it goes into a body of water. Ex) runoff from farm fields, golf courses, roads, construction sites, parking lots etc.

  5. TIME TO TALK With your partner, compare and contrast point source and non-point source pollution.

  6. Types of Water pollution 1. Disease causing agents: Source: Untreated human and animal wastes: It is thought that 80% percent of diseases in developing countries are caused by lack of water and water pollution, and that it kills 10 million people annually. http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/publications/books/housing/Graphics/chapter_10/Figure10.03.jpg

  7. In more developed countries, sewage treatment plants have reduced or eliminated the worst sources of water pathogens. But in less-developed countries, it is estimated that at least 2.5 billion people lack adequate sanitation and that less than half these people have access to clean drinking water.

  8. 2. Acids and Bases. Acids are released as a by-product of industrial processes. The burning of coal and oil releases sulfuric and nitric acid into the air.This returns to the water in the form of acid rain.

  9. TIME TO TALK With your partner, discuss and answer the following questions: 1. How does acid in the air become trapped in rain? 2. With what process in the water cycle does this relate?

  10. 3. Organic Water Pollution Exposure to even very low concentrations can cause birth defects, genetic disorders, and cancer. The two main sources of toxic organic chemicals are industrial and household chemicals and the runoff of pesticides from farms, golf courses, and roadsides. http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/2200915.jpg?v=1&c=ViewImages&k

  11. 4. Sediment or suspended matter: Sources: Soil erosion releasing sediment and solids They cloud water and reduce photosynthesis, which disrupts the aquatic food webs. Excess sediment can also destroy coral reefs and shoals near shore. Sediment flow can be beneficial, mud carried by rivers nourished floodplains around the world. It also creates valuable deltas and islands.

  12. REDUCING WATER POLLUTION • WHAT CAN WE DO??? • Be careful what you put down the drain. • Don’t throw trash in streams/lakes etc. • Eat organic food (no pesticides) • Support the “Safe Drinking Water Act”-the main federal law that ensures the quality of Americans' drinking water;
