L18&19:The 1920s as a Backlash to the Progressive Era The Shifting Size and Scope of the National Government: Part One Agenda Objective: To understand what life was like in the 1920s with particular emphasis on democracy and capitalism / laissez-faire. To analyze how the 1920s were a response to the Progressive Era and what effect the decade had on the shifting size and scope of the national government. Schedule: Video: 1920s Segment from A Walk Through the 20th Century Station Activity! Homework: Consult unit schedule for background readings. Prepare for summative discussion: (Tan = Mon 3/18; Red = Wed 3/20; Blue = Tues 3/19)

Goal One & Tasks • Understand what life was like in the 1920s • Task: • We will watch the segment on the 1920s from the series A Walk Through the 20th Century • Take notes with an eye toward: • What is happening to democracy in the 1920s? • What is happening to capitalism/laissez-faire in the 1920s? • How are the 1920s a response to the Progressive Era? • What effect the decade had on the shifting size and scope of the National Government?

Station Activity • You will visit 3 stations with 3 unique groups • At each station you will use a source to evaluate the following questions (as many as appropriate given the station): • What is happening to democracy in the 1920s? • What is happening to capitalism/laissez-faire in the 1920s? • How are the above actions a response to the Progressive Era? • You will then close by analyzing the pendulum image in light of the question: What is happening to the size and scope of the national government from the Gilded Age to the 1920s? • To answer the question you may write a thesis or mark up the pendulum to convey how your argument breaks down.
