  1. Friendship and Betrayal BY: Manuel Elizondo, Roman Perez, Alex Kellum, Brandon Bonham, and Gabe Gonzalez

  2. Primary Theme of the Novel • Friendship and Betrayal is the primary theme of the novel because it was played throughout the entire book through a variety of characters. Huck and Jim were two of the main characters that portrayed Friendship and Betrayal, but other characters such as Dauphin, Duke, Pap, and Ms. Watson played a big role in this theme as well.

  3. Friendship • Huck grew up in a society were slaves were looked down upon/influenced to discriminate slaves • Huck faked death/ escaped • Huck met Jim for the first time • They had each others backs since the start • They developed a bond between each other over a period of time • Even though Huck came from a society that discriminates slaves, he was open mindedand accepted Jim for who he was, not his race • Example: Huck said he would never tell anyone that he is in contact and helping a run away slave. • Ch. 8 • Manuel Elizondo

  4. Friendship • Friendship is really important theme between Huck and Jim. They develop a really strong relationship and they look out of each other. • An example of friendship is when Huck first finds Jim at Jackson Island • Jim is a runaway slave • Huck made him a promise • They both decide to run away together • They develop a father son relationship • Chapters 9 & 10 • Roman Perez

  5. Betrayal • Reason: the characters in the book are all jerks. They consistently show how uncivilized they truly are. They are tainted and crooked by there ideals that they have been taught to live by. • Example: Jim overhears miss Watson talking about selling him for $800. Even after he has shown that he is loyal to her. • Ch. 8 • Brandon Bonham

  6. Betrayal and Friendship • Our theme is the primary theme in the book because friendship and betrayal are apparent in almost every chapter of the book. • One example of betrayal is when Huck lies to Jim about them being separated."Dat truck dah is TRASH; en trash is what people is dat puts dirt on de head erdeyfren'sen makes 'em ashamed." • This example also has the theme of friendship in it because Huck apologizes to Jim. • "It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a ni***r; but I done it, and I warn't ever sorry for it afterwards, neither. I didn't do him no more mean tricks, and I wouldn't done that one if I'd a knowed it would make him feel that way.“ • Ch. 15 • Gabe Gonzalez

  7. Betrayal • Betrayal is played throughout the book but especially through the characters of the dauphin and duke. It has also played a part throughout Huck's life through his father and friends, there are many different adventures Huck takes that end up having a sense of betrayal in some sort of way. • An example of betrayal is when the Dauphin and Duke sell Jim back into slavery. • When Huck and Jim first met them, both the Dauphin and Duke help Jim by covering him in blue and hiding him so that he would not be caught. • Betrayal is played when the Dauphin and Duke leave a friendship to sell Jim back into slavery • This is one of the examples played throughout the book • That have a sense of betrayal. • chapters 19-31 • Alex Kellum

  8. Conclusion • Huck witnessed and contributed to both friendship and betrayal in the novel. A variety of characters showed that friendship and betrayal was the main theme throughout the book. Several examples were given to help support this theme. Huck grew and learned from his life experiences he has had so far.

  9. Another Theme • Another theme that is portrayed heavily in the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is Conformity and Civilization. Even though Huck is very naïve Huck takes friendship very seriously and does not judge Jim by appearance. Huck accepts Jim for his personality and does not judge him because of his skin color. Huck and Jim relied on each other to survive due to lack of rules and help of civilization.
