  2. Structure of Presentation What are, generally speaking,the main socio-economic problems in your region that you wish to tackle? What are the economic and community benefits you try to accomplish through highereducation? Why is higher education the most appropriate means to reach these objectives? What are themost important challenges and obstacles you have to overcome/take into account to accomplish the desired economic and community benefits through higher education?

  3. The region covers an area of 10 057 km2 (12,8 % of the CR). Theregion has the lowest density of population in CR (62 inhabitants per km2). Study area South Bohemian region - one of the oldest rural region with a long tradition of agricultural development The main town of region is České Budějovice with94,700 permanent residents. Theregion hasseven districts.

  8. What are, generally speaking, the main socio-economic problems in your region that you wish to tackle? General problems • Transboundary relationships and the former iron curtain. • Bad infrastructure especially in the marginal parts of the Region • Low knowledge of foreign language and IT skills.

  9. What are the economic and community benefits you try to accomplish through highereducation? • Serving traditional community needs: teachers, nurses, engineers, etc. • Knowledge developed economy • More competitive region • General regional business growth • More jobs

Why is higher education the most appropriate means to reach these objectives? • There is a contract with the South Bohemian Region 2009, on the level of the University, but in fact this vision will be fulfilled by the faculties or departments. • There are currently studying 12 000 students at the University of South Bohemia.

Why is higher education the most appropriate means to reach these objectives? • It is possible to find the link between higher education, success in grantcompetitions and subsequent employment, especially in infrastructure projects • Lifelong learning in the civil service, obligatory upgrading of the qualification of employees • Life long learning • University of the 3rd age • Grant agency for supporting young researchers -Phd students • It is responding with the spirit of the project UNICREDS – The share of the combined studies at the USB can show us the number of employed students

Institute of Physical Biology JU Nové Hrady (NH)- Research Technological Parc business incubator – Centre of biological technologies, NH Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters, South Bohemian Research Center of Aquaculture and Biodiversity of Hydrocenoses(CENAKVA),Vodňany „We want to be the best Central European scientific research center focused on fisheries and protection of waters“ Faculty of Scienc building infrastructure for research in Arctis and Antarctis Faculty of Health and Social Studies – practical cooperation with socal and health project in the region

Economic faculty (USB) There was established Centrum inovací a aplikovaného výzkumu (Centre for innovations and applied research) which prepares not only development project, but also development of cooperation of selected students of Faculty of Economics and businessmen in the project Agentura profesního rozvoje (Agency for career development). In the framework of these activities started cooperation with important regional enterprises such as BOSCH, Schneider Electric, Schwan cosmetics, Eon, Lactoprod Zelandia, Legro Consult. The cooperation in 2007 was targeted especially on support of residencies of selected students in mentioned enterprises (12 students participated on those residencies).

What are the most important challenges and obstacles you have to overcome/take into account to accomplish the desired economic and community benefits through higher education? • The university was founded 1991 as the initiative of the local Institutes of the Academy of Sciences, it was not the social order, the needs of the region, there was no pressure from the business. • Communication barriers inside and outside the university • Companies have little interest in cooperating with the university • Too small work market for educated people in relation to university size • The region cannot take advantage of the universities
