Picking a Winner in the UK ! • Task • Identify and select varieties for the U.K. market • Elsoms Sites • Six U.K. Trial locations • Five are co-located with Official trials • Three specific disease testing locations in the U.K. • LLS Specific nurseries - EW region & Scotland • Canker: specific nurseries in the EW region • Club root: specific nurseries - U.K. + Europe

Yield • Data on all slides in the presentation is taken from the HGCA Candidate list for England and Wales and where appropriate from the Full Recommended list 2013. • For both Candidate and Recommended lists the control varieties are the same, DK Cabernet, Excalibur, Vision and Flash. • The RL data is a 3 or 4 year mean. • The Candidate list data is a 2 year mean. • There will be slight variances in the results for the control varieties between the two lists due to the difference in years used to calculate the means.

Verticillium Wilt • Not just a European disease….. • An increasing problem in the UK! • Dr Gladders’ recommendations for managing the risk were • Determine its prevalence on individual farms • Good agronomy – a strong plant holds off verticillium • Extended rotations • Variety choice • Trinity has good resistance – • Galileo parent has very good resistance • Trinity performed excellently in the Gottingen trials.
