  1. Nancy Katherine MillerThe Road to State Breanna Harris

  2. Greenwood Cross Country had not been the most successful over the years; in fact, just last year at their state competition the girl’s team came in 27th out of 27 teams. This year was shaping up to be no different with the addition of a new coach, Mr. Lowe, and the fact that half way through their season the women’s team lost their number 1 runner. Someone wishing to beat the odds against them and who is in the exact place to do so is Kate Miller, a junior at Greenwood who has been on the team for 2 years. Kate is the team’s 6th runner and in the case of a tie her time could mean the difference between a loss and a victory.

  3. This year Kate was competing in the regional meet and only the top 3 teams will be advancing on to the state competition. The pressure is on as she gets ready to warm up before the start of the race. Many will wonder why you would pick running as a sport with all the pressure while competing. When asked what she loves about running Kate said “It’s like an escape. I feel so calm when I run. It gives me a chance to think about things without being overwhelmed by them.”

  4. Before each meet she has to get her number, talk to her coach, and stretch. Kate has to be sure she has stretched well and she had a good warm up, but due to the 50 degree temperature the team could find it difficult to compete. Each team member is dressed in their coats and sweat pants but when it is time to compete they have to be in uniform.

  5. Every member of the team joins together right before the start of the race and goes on a warm up run with each other. They stay together and encourage each other to do well in the race, to stick it out, and crush the competition. Each person has their own strengths and their own weaknesses but they stick together and believe in each other’s abilities. “We’re a family” says Kate “we love each other. Not only do we run together, but we are always together.” This team is really like a support system.

  6. Each time Kate’s team competes they always pray before the competition. “He’s the reason we run” says Kate’s teammate Jenny Geiko. When Kate was asked she said “Its tradition. We ask Jesus for help when we run before each meet.” Kate and her teammates don’t just share a sport they share a belief and that is what makes them so amazing. “We love Jesus and I thank Him” says Kate.

  7. At 9:45 it is first call. All the teams line up at the starting line and they await take off. The official overlooking the game warns everyone about the time and then shots a gun to announce the beginning of the race. They are gone before the shot is done echoing and each runner is fighting to maintain first place during the 5K. It’s like a wall of bodies each moving at the same speed preparing for the long race ahead, but after a while the wall disperses and there are small gaps between every runner.

  8. Greenwood’s coach, Mr. Lowe, gives each runner a goal for each race and at her first mile Kate was hitting her mark perfectly. Her whole team was running strong. It appeared that she would beat several teams and help her team to win first place. However, towards the end of her run disaster hit and Kate got a side stitch. The side stitch caused her to have difficulty breathing and then further causing her time to get slower.

  9. Most of her teammates were ahead of her and she had no encouragement to help her keep running. “The hardest part is not giving up, you have to constantly tell yourself it’ll be worth the pain when you finish.” said Kate. With her team out of sight and her side in pain all she could do was clutch her side in attempt to decrease the pain. As soon as she crossed the finish line she doubled over and had to rest. All she could do was finish the race and hope that the rest of her team had great times otherwise they wouldn’t be going to state.

  10. Kate was exhausted from the race and she still had to cheer for the boy’s team before the awards ceremony. Her time was far behind her best and she couldn’t help but be disappointed in herself. She grabbed a water bottle and tried to cool down so she could cheer for the rest of her team. Now it was nothing but a waiting game. Once all the guys were in she could know her teams score.

  11. All the boys were done and Kate was just waiting in anticipation. Her teammate Lindsay Mumley came in 4th place and now she was just awaiting the teams place over all. Then the official announced that Greenwood came in 2nd place overall and the team was ecstatic. They were going to State! The whole team was overjoyed and everyone was so proud of their accomplishment. They were able to achieve what they wanted and they did a wonderful job.
