The Space Data Coordination Group (SDCG) is advancing the Baseline global data acquisition strategy for the Group on Earth Observations (GFOI). Hosted by USGS on September 13-14, the meeting included key space agencies like NASA, ESA, and JAXA. A visualisation tool is necessary for progress reporting and planning. The report is still a work in progress, with deadlines set for pre-Christmas delivery and refinement as new satellite missions launch. SDCG aims to enhance data usage and demonstrate the application of existing archives, while aligning with the strategies of GEOGLAM.

SDCG developments • CEOS Space Data Coordination Group is working to develop the Baseline global data acquisition strategy for GFOI • SDCG-2 hosted by USGS, Sept 13-14. Attended by all key space agencies (CNES, CONAE, CSA, DLR, ESA, JAXA, NASA, USGS + INPE via video link) • Report remains a work in progress – more time needed (SDCG-3) • Visualisation tools required for planning and to provide quantitative results for coverage - NASA SEO willing to support • Tools can be recycled to provide ongoing acquisition progress reporting for GFOI – showing which data that countries can expect for their territory year on year • Significant work remains to finalise report and Co-Chairs and SEC are preparing a plan to work towards a pre-xmas delivery for a v1.0 for review and finalisation by SDCG-3 (and more importantly SIT-28) • Baseline strategy is a living document that will be continually refined as new satellite missions become operational (information tools key for this)
Issues arising from SIT & SDCG meetings • Need to demonstrate utilisation of the archive amassed for the NDs – can GFOI leads identify planned activity that might make visible application of the CEOS GFOI archive for a demonstrator GFOI dataset? • SDCG-3 (and related) meeting dates for Australia need to be finalised ASAP • Travel budgets are tight and lots of notice needed • Ideally SDCG will come after SDS in the 2-week window • SDCG approach and capabilities has sparked imagination of CEOS/GEO • Moving CEOS/GEO closer to ‘delivery’ • Request from GEOGLAM to support their strategy design • Provisional acceptance – subject to demands of GFOI • SDCG was established solely for GFOI and remains ad-hoc • Strong continued support from CEOS but data usage must be demonstrated • Clarity on evolution of FCT NDs to GFOI participating countries also needed – and agreement on expansion priorities
