Empowering Student Autonomy and Mastery in Modern Learning Environments
This guide explores how to foster student autonomy, mastery, and purpose in educational settings, inspired by thought leaders like Alan November and Dan Pink. Key concepts include giving students opportunities for self-directed learning through FedEx Days and DIY performance reviews. Emphasizing a flipped classroom model encourages deeper engagement, while promoting a culture of trust and respect transforms the teacher-student dynamic. Additionally, leveraging technology and creating collaborative learning spaces enhances the educational experience, making it more inclusive and effective.

Dan Pink • Primary motivators (Link: HoM) • Autonomy - give students (and teachers) more… FedEx Days (work on what YOU want) • Mastery – We like to get better at stuff – DIY performance review (NOT appraisal) DIY student report cards (cfJohn Hattie – Visible Learning) • Purpose – we need to know why we are doing things. Have conversations about why.
Alan November • Flipped Classroom – more than just exchanging lectures and homework • Problem: the more experienced a teacher becomes the less they understand the problems of the first-time learner. • Student questions – vital component of homework • The teacher must study the student questions • Then set group work in the class based on these questions • Students debrief each other
Martin Levins – Armidale School • Foster a culture of trust and respect • Let’s assume kids are not going to do the wrong thing • Shift from a “control” to a “facilitate” philosophy • Move to technologiesseen as normal • Create collaborative learning environments • BYOT - Technologies is a much broader term that devices. A pencil is a technology
Stephen Heppell • Bring a Browser – the way to go • Student autonomy over the learning space, let them arrange things • Lighting – research shows students work better in spaces where there is more light • Idea: Put a smartphone in the corner of your room to video/record yourself. Share with a colleague (DIY performance review).
Ewan McIntosh • Problem finding rather than problem solving. • Characteristics of Creative People: • Be curious (Link: Ken Robinson) • Listen to yourself • Humble is good • Good energy is infectious • Find a way • Move from lower to higher order thinking: GoogleablevsUngoogleable
Sir Ken Robinson • What it is to be human – Curiosity, Diversity and Creativity • Broad curriculum needed • Set high goals and give autonomy to learners
Why Learning@TSS? • Students have autonomous access • Explanations (text files, books), quizzes, forums all help with mastery • Works in any browser • Can be used with the flipped classroom model – database/forum – collect their questions. • Has application in every subject (let’s make it a broad curriculum) • Purpose supplied by the teacher
