UVa Embraces The Alliance • Share with the Alliance a deep interest in increasing the number of under-represented minorities in the health professions • Joining the Alliance was in line with President John Casteen’s”Embracing Diversity in Pursuit of Excellence” initiative-- Collaboration with HBCUs a major goal • SOM initiatives to increase numbers of minority students, with support and encouragement of then Dean of SOM and Provost of the university, Arthur Garson, M.D., MPH
UVa Embraces The Alliance • 2006: one student (Tiffani Bell) in summer fellowship; four students from Virginia HBCUs in our SMDEP program; two faculty (VUU, HU) • Seven Students from HBCU member institutions participated in UVa’s SMDEP and in research fellowships at UVa in Summers 2007& 2008 (five from Hampton University and one from Norfolk State University)
