Graduation RequirementsCollege Preparatory Diploma Bible(one for each high school year enrolled at MCA) 4 English 4 Mathematics (one every year at MCA) 4 Science 4 Social Studies 2 Foreign Language (Sequential) 1 Fine Arts 1 ½ Physical Education ½ each of Health and Speech 1 Technology (BCIS=1, Journalism = ½, Graphic Design = ½)

  3. Honors Diploma Bible (one for each high school year enrolled at MCA) 4 English 4 Mathematics (one every year+ must include and pass PreCalculus) 4 Science 4 Social Studies 3 Foreign Language (Sequential) 2 Fine Arts 1 ½ Physical Education ½ each of Health and Speech 1 Technology(BCIS=1, Journalism = ½, Graphic Design = ½) 1 Additional Elective (Additional foreign language, history, math, fine arts, journalism or additional approved course from Collin College) • Minimum of 3.5 cumulative GPA • 3 AP or dual credit core courses (not including speech) • 40 hours of pre-approved community service grades 9-12

  4. Regular, Honors, Dual Credit & Advanced Placement Courses • Dual Credit courses – community college level courses taught on our campus. Both high school and college credit earned by passing the course. Available to juniors and seniors. • Advanced Placement courses – university level college courses taught by our teachers ending with a national final exam in May. A college or university may grant college credit based on the exam score. Available to juniors and seniors.

  5. Course Requests • Complete the four-year plan form • Student and parent sign or initial • Return to counselor Visit MCA’s website, Upper School, Academics http://www.mckinneychristian.org/index.php/upper_school/academicsfor a PDF file of course descriptions. • Prerequisites will be confirmed before placing in classes. • Enrolled students will be placed in classes on a first-come, first served basis for most classes.

  7. English World Literature I World Literature II American Literature or AP Language & Composition (2013-14) British Literature or AP Literature & Composition (2014-15) AP English courses are independent of each other. You may choose either course, both courses, or neither course.

  8. Algebra I, 9th grade Algebra I, 8th grade MATH Geometry Algebra II Algebra II, Honors Geometry Pre-calculus, Honors College Algebra Students should take their highest level math senior year. See course descriptions for academic prerequisite requirements. AP Calculus AB

  9. Basic Science Basic Science Courses: Biology Chemistry I Physics Environmental Science

Honors Science Honors Science Path: Biology Chemistry I, Honors Chemistry II, Honors or Physics, Honors Physics, Honors or Anatomy & Physiology, Honors or AP Biology See pre-requisite and co-requisite requirements in Course Descriptions. Students may take basic science courses if they no longer want the honors science path.

  12. Spanish Spanish 1a + Spanish 1b (7th & 8th grade Span I) or Spanish I Spanish II Spanish III

Fine Arts Electives Visual Art I – 5th period Visual Art II – 1st or 5th period (can take multiple years) • Band – 5th period • Contemporary Band – • 1st period • Choir – 5th period • Small Ensemble Choir – • 1st period • Drama – 5th period 1 – Fine Arts course required for graduation 2 – Fine Arts courses required for the Honors diploma

Required Electives Physical Education: 1 ½ credits required 1 – Physical Education (non-MCA Athletes) 2 – Strength and Conditioning (MCA Athletes) 3 – Earn through MCA athletic competition Technology: 1 credit required 1 – BCIS class 2 – Technology Internship* 3 – Graphic Design (1/2 credit)* 4 – Journalism (1/2 credit per year) * Must meet prerequisite requirements

  15. Required Electives Communication Applications – ½ credit required This is a Dual Credit course Health– ½ credit required Not available 2012-13; offered 2013-14

  16. General Electives Elementary School Internship Journalism: • Yearbook – 1st period • Newspaper – 5th period PSAT/SAT/ACT Test Preparation (1 semester) Take junior year; not offered 2012-13 Teacher, Office, or Library Assistant Study Hall

Preparing for College…Now For admissions, colleges primarily consider: • High school grades (GPA) • Class Rank (primarily TX public universities); MCA does not rank students • Course rigor (AP, Dual Credit & Honors) • College admissions test scores (SAT & ACT) • Activities/Involvement beyond the classroom • Recommendations – teachers, counselor, community

  19. Course Rigor As a college preparatory school, all classes are taught at the equivalent of pre-AP level or higher.

  20. PLAN and PSAT Preliminary tests for the college admissions tests. Taken in 9th, 10th, and 11th grades Look at score reports for an estimated ACT/SAT score – actual scores should be higher than estimates from freshman year as both tests are scaled to sophomores. Do something productive during the summer

  22. Student Resume is Critical Gives insight into the student as an individual and outside of class. • Used in Holistic Review • Provide to those writing recommendation letters • Used in scholarship determinations

Student Resume Begin creating the resume now: • Include full legal name and date of birth • Include anything and everything about your life outside of class • List all awards and accomplishments earned individually or as part of a group (team, choir, etc.) • Include all community service, including MCA’s quarterly community service days • List time given to each activity (5-day mission trip, work 10 hours/week, etc.) May use Resume Builder in Naviance to store info and create resume.

Exploring Colleges MCA campus visits • College representatives will visit with groups or individual students on campus—Fall and Spring College Information Sessions & College Fairs • Exploring College Options, May 6th, Dallas: 5 Ivy League schools • Look for dates on college websites College Events on MCA’s Upper School website– schedule of upcoming visits, info sessions, and college fairs Get on the mailing list for the schools you are considering

  32. MCA Exam Exemptions Exam exemptions offered 2nd semester only: • 4-quarter course average of 93% • Absences: max 6 in class / up to 3 in semester class • 9th grade maximum 2 exemptions • 10th grade 2 exemptions • 11th grade 3 exemptions • 12th grade all courses
