  1. Welcome to GCC! Getting the Most out of Participating in the The Math Science Preparatory Program

  2. Differences Between a Middle School classroom and a College Classroom

  3. Differences Between a Middle School classroom and a College Classroom

  4. Using your GCC Accounts Most GCC professors require that you only send them email from your my.genesee.edu email account. You can log in by going to www.genesee.edu Use the genesis login you received from the GCC IT department. How Many Students have your information with you?

  5. Using a computer on Campus As a student at GCC you may use any public computer on campus. There are computers in the computer lab, in the student union, and in the library. You can do school work, check your email, or research information. You should not use facebook or play games if there are other people waiting to use a computer. You should only visit appropriate websites, account use is monitored.

  6. Completing your Homework You may wish to set aside several specific times each week to work on your MSP 161 homework. In college courses the most successful students spend 2 hours outside of class for every hour they spend inside of class each week. Because this is a preparatory course, it may not require 4 full hours of work outside of class, however you may want to plan to set aside at least 30 minutes/day just in case and then adjust after you know how long it typically takes you to finish.

  7. Learning the Material DO NOT TRY TO DO THE HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU LEARN THE MATERIAL Read the assigned topic BEFORE class and perhaps try a few sample problems. When ever you do a sample problem SHOW YOUR WORK and write down any questions you have about the problem. ATTEND CLASS – If you have to miss class make sure to spend sometime with a friend who was able to attend to get the notes.

  8. Learning the Material • Take DETAILED NOTES – This can not be over stated • Let’s look at a method for taking notes in class!

  9. Your Grade This course will appear on your college transcript from GCC so you will want to achieve the highest grade possible. You will need to earn an average grade of B or above in MSP 161-164 to progress into the next level of the STEM program, but of course A’s are better. If you complete each of your homework assignments and attend each class you will do well in this course.

  10. Your ID Card You will need to keep track of this card for 2 years. This card allows you to check out library books and use campus center facilities (computer labs) Your parents can put $$ on the card so that you can buy snacks on campus. Provides proof that you are a student at GCC

  11. Eating on Campus The Cafeteria is open until 7pm on Tuesdays. The vending machines in the cafeteria are available all the time. Do not bring food into your classroom. Do not bring food into the computer labs. You can bring some specific types of snacks into the library.
