  2. Sheltered Instruction - SIOP Demographic Changes • Over 5.5 million elementary and secondary students were identified as English Learner’s (OESA, 2005) • English Learner’s now comprise 10.5% of the nation’s student population • 60 percent of the English Learners are native born

  6. Why SIOP? School Board Strategic Direction: • Improve curriculum, programs and services to provide increased academic rigor for all students • AYP Plan: Provide SIOP Training Changing demographics of Faribault

  7. Sheltered Instruction - SIOP AYP GOAL 1: • The Faribault Public School District is committed to increasing the reading skills in all strands so that 40% of the district’s black students will demonstrate proficiency in reading as measured by the 2008 MCAII.

Sheltered Instruction - SIOP AYP Goal 2: • The Faribault Public School District will increase skills in Data Analysis, Statistics, & Probability; and Spatial Sense, Geometry, and Measurement of LEP students in K-12 so that 45% of LEP students will demonstrate proficiency in mathematics as measured by the 2008 MCAII.

What is SIOP? • Supporting Research: Seven year research project (1996-2003) for the Center for Research on Education, Diversity of Education • All of the research has demonstrated an increase in EL student achievement when compared with similar groups of EL students who were not exposed to SIOP
