How do I know if it’s really bullying? • Bullying is unfair and one sided. • It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose. • All bullying behaviors involve the use of power to hurt someone.
All bullying behaviors involve the use of power to hurt someone. Here’s an example of how others may have tried to use power: A 5th grade boy doesn’t allow certain kids to be on his football team. When someone tries to join his team, he looks at them and says, “You stink! You can’t be on my team! Go to the other team.” Choosing who can be on his football team becomes this student’s source of power.
All bullying behaviors involve the use of power to hurt someone. What are some other examples of “power?” Popularity Size Strength A certain item (IPOD, video game) A team (like a football team) A certain group of friends
Refuse Bullying Safely Ask yourself, “Is it safe for me to refuse by speaking out?” These things might make it unsafe to refuse on your own: • The person bullying you is older or bigger than you. • More than one person is ganging up on you. • You have no friends who can help you. • You feel trapped. If this happens, what should you do?
Things to Do When You Refuse Bullying 1. Check your feelings. You need to decide what you’re feeling and whether you need to calm down. 2. Use assertive behaviors. Say, “That’s bullying. I want you to stop!” You can join another group, find a friend, or tell an adult what happened. 3. Walk away calmly.
Adults need to know that bullying is occurring; otherwise, they won’t be able to make this a safe, respectful school.
Is it tattling when you report bullying to an adult? Why or why not? No. When you report bullying, you are doing it to keep someone safe. Trying to get someone into trouble is tattling. But reporting means telling an adult about unsafe behavior to keep someone from getting hurt.
Remember Anytime you are unsure about whether you should refuse or report a bullying situation, you should go ahead and report it. The adult will help you decide how to handle it.
Review—Respondingto Bullying 1. Recognize the bullying. Is it fair? Does it happen over and over? Are they using power to hurt someone? 2. Refuse to be bullied. Ask, “Is it safe for me to speak out assertively?” If it is safe to speak out: -Say, “Stop. That’s bullying.” -Walk away calmly. 3. Report it to an adult immediately if: Someone is unsafe. Refusing doesn’t work.
