  2. THESIS • Women are affected because of institutions, the capitalist empire of the US, militarization, and gender politics consequently in the borderlands of the US and Mexico.

Research questions • How are women treated along the border of Mexico and the US by law enforcement (border patrol)? • Is there systemic violence in the borders? • How is militarization and heteropatriarchy affecting women? • Does militarization within institutions relate to the prevalence of sexual violence of victimized women along the border and border towns?

  4. summary • Women’s sexuality and characterizations of heterosexuality has transgressed into the borderlands. That is, heteropatriarchy, or women of color are deemed as lower status in the hierarchy where an Anglo-American is at the top of the chain. • This leads to the oppression of women of color: they are exploited and objectified. • Institutions sustain and preserve the heteropatriarchal ideals.

  5. rESEARCH • Gender roles • “Distrust or hostility between the sexes” • Within the context of heteropatriarchy and male dominance ideologies, men are more likely to treat women as lesser and not equal • Border patrol • Violations of human rights • Militarization method of sweeps: targeting people of color and specifically women of color • Cuidad Juarez • Records of women disappearing and murdered • Targeting dark, poor women

RESEARCH • Three Pillars of White Supremacy • the framework of white supremacy includes capitalism, genocide and orientalism • Racial hierarchy is demonstrated in the border • Rape in the borderlands • Documented rape cases of women of color • Women expect sexual violence when crossing • Rape is in the form of militarization • Case of Luz Lopez and Norma Contreras • Credibility was given more to the border patrol agents, rather than the women who had the label of “illegal”

  7. CONTRIBUTION • The research on women of color within the borderlands greatly contributes to Chican@ Studies on the basis that the lessons interrelate to the topic. Chicanas and/or Latinas are part of the bigger influences of politics, the economy, patriarchal hierarchy, and racism, to name a few. La frontera, as this course has gone over, experiences discrimination and people of color are specifically excluded and marginalized. Peolple of color are susceptible to stereotypes and oppression when facing institutions and heteropatriarchal ideals– that is the dominant Anglo American society that controls la frontera.
