  3. Transport Background • Area: 147,181 sq. km.(56,136 sq. mi.) • Population: 25.9 million (2006) • Road-Dominating mode of Transport • Total length : aprox. 17000km • Strategic Roads: 7000km • Local Roads: 10000km

  4. Transport Background… • Air Services is the second popular mode of Transport. (43 Airports) • Rail mode of Transport—very limited • Dry ports 3 +1+1(planned) • Integrated Check posts - 4

  5. Roads • The average road density is 11.4 km/100 square km. In terms of serving the population, the average density is 7.5 km/10,000 populations.

  7. Key Elements of Road Development • 69 District HQs connected so far by roads. • Completion of links to ALL District HQs by 2011. • Upgrading of unsealed roads in Terai and main links into the hills • Improvement of network in mid-hills, inter-District links – mid-hills corridor

Recent Initiatives • Technical Assistance from GOI • Preliminary Survey • New Jalpaiguri (India) to Kakadvitta (Nepal) • Jogabani (India) to Biratnagar (Nepal) • Nautanwa (India) to Bhairahwa (Nepal) • Nepalganj Road ( India) to Nepalganj (Nepal) • Jayanagar and Janakpur with extension to Bardibas • RITES carying out above works

What's going on? • GON invited Expression of Interests from the International consulting firms for Feasibility study of Mechi-Mahakalli and Kathmandu-Pokhara electrical railway line • 6 firms have been short listed out of 19 international consultants participated. • One among the short listed firms is expected to be selected by the end of this fiscal year.

  17. Institutional and Legal Frame work • GON planning to establish a Railway Department. • Necessary legal documents (Act, Regulations )will be prepared in F/Y 09/10.

  31. Asian Highway • Asian highway network in the region has reached about 140,000 km •  AH-2 from Kakarbhitta-Bramhadev Mandi-1027km • AH-42 from Kodari to Birgunj 297 km

  33. SAARC Regional Transport Corridor • Road Corridors • Between Nepal and India there are 19 official trading points, of which 15 are active points. Among the 15 points only 6 points are most actively used. • Karachi- Lahore – New Delhi- Nepalgunj –KTM (3147km) • Kathmandu-Kakarvitta-Phulbari-Banglabandha-Mongla(1362km) • Kathmandu- kakarvitta- Phuntsholing –Thimpu (1011km) • Kathmandu- kolkata/Haldia(1323km) • Kathmandu- Bhairahawa-Sunauli-Lucknow (663km) • Biratnagar-Kolkata (689km)

  36. SASEC / SUBREGIONAL TRANSPORT • Construction of 29 km black top road with 7m carriageway from Bhairahawa to Bhumahi • Birgunj(ICD)-Jeetpur (TRP) -12km by pass road • Road based new Kakarbhitta ICD in an area of 7.5 ha • All these projects to be completed by June 2010

Regional Agreements on Transport • Intergovernmental Agreement on the Asian Highway Network • Signing took place in April 2004 in Shanghai and entered into force on 4 July 2005. • As of now the Agreement has been signed by 28 member states of which 23 are Parties • Intergovernmental Agreement on Trans Asian Railway Network • Signing took place in Nov.10, 2006 and will enter into force from June, 2009

Regional Agreements on Transport.. • First meeting of the SAARC ministers of transport held in New Delhi in August, 2007 • Identified regional and sub-regional pilot projects for implementation • Projects concerned to Nepal are: • Birgunj- Katihar-Singhabad- Rohanpur-Chittagong with links to Jogbani, Biratnagar and Agartala -Rail Corridor • Kathmandu-Birgunj-Kolkata/Haldia -Road corridor
