Jumpstarting with Senate Bill 08-194Public Health Act • Created partly in response to health and environmental health disparities found in 2002 assessment. • Addresses the inconsistent infrastructure of public health in Colorado. • Emphasis on meeting and achieving the ten essential services-the functions of public health. • Focus on improving local and district public health agencies.

Goals of the Statewide Public Health Improvement Plan • Set Colorado’s public health priorities based on health status indicators • Guide the public health system in targeting core public health services and establishing standards • Consider available resources and identify areas needing greater resource allocation • Recommend legislative or regulatory action • Provide a strategy for coordinating services delivery within the public health system • Provide measurable indicators of effectiveness and successes

What is the connection to accreditation and regionalization? • Standards related to accreditation • If a local health agency chooses to pursue national accreditation • Standards also provide a guide for boards of health and staff of LPHA • Assessment/Planning related to regionalization • Community Health Assessments are the guide to local public health improvement planning and identification of opportunities for shared services among counties

Assessment and Planning • Community Health Assessments • Gathering information on the last CHA completed-date, method used, scope, if contracted, time allotted, how it has been used • Will develop a template for future assessment process based on input • Identify assistance from universities /students • Coordinate with all departments in CDPHE Office of Planning and Partnerships Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment

Questions for you… • For rural counties, can we conduct a regional process for assessments and planning similar to the work of the West Central Collaborative? • What would be the benefits of regional assessments? • Are there specific areas of public health or environmental health that a regional assessment would be particularly beneficial? • What concerns would you have about this approach? • How would we determine the regions?
