The Canons of Rhetoric • The principles by which all writing, speaking, or visual arguments operate (p.54): • Invention, arrangement, style, memory, delivery Invention: forge a powerful text that argues a point, to convince others to see a particular perspective, usually your won (p.54). - Photograph: selection, placement, perspective, and framing. - Writing texts: selection, placement, perspective, and framing.

  5. Style: choose the appropriate expression for your argument. Word choice, syntax, pacing, tone… Voice Persona Rhetorical stance

  6. Titles. Introduction. Conclusion • Rhetorical hook. P.65 • Excise for invention, arrangement and style Position paper: present one side of an issue However, you want to acknowledge other sides of an issue, using alternative personas. Finally, you synthesize multiple perspectives and advance your own on top of others.
