  3. Datacenter Overview • 14iDataPlex servers, 16 cores, 24GB memory • Powered on (Connected) and idle • Running RHEL KVM • Automatically bare-metal provisioned when discovered

  4. Packing enabled • Overcommit enabled - Nodes have 16 CPUs, a factor of two yields 32 vCPUs(i.e., one real CPU = two vCPUs)

  5. Load Balance enabled • High Availability enabled • Select Energy Optimization

  6. Energy Optimization • Enable Energy Optimization • Power off idle hypervisors and keep at least one hypervisor connected (running) and two hypervisors on Standby

  7. Click Yes

  8. View affect of the Energy Optimization Policy on the Data Center

  9. The Datacenter is idle (i.e., no workload/VMs running) • The idle hypervisors will be powered off leaving one (1) connected and two (2) on standby

  10. Data Center Portal • Resources and workload (VMs) can be created and managed directly without the need for additional management portals. • Click New to Create VMs

  11. Select the RHEL pattern • Click Instantiate

  12. Specify the number of VMs and click create

  13. The VM quickly provisions to Active • Click New to create another VM

  14. Select the Win2k8 pattern

  15. Click Instantiate

  16. Specify the number of VMs and click create

  17. The VM quickly provisions to Active • Select the Machines tab to see both VMs

  18. Control and manage resources directly from the portal • Click Power • Click Manage • Click Remote Access and open a consol

  21. Both VMs were started on the same hypervisor because the Packing policy is enabled • Select the Machinestab to see the VM details • Select the Clustertab to create load on the system

  22. Meet Demand • Click the Modify button and select the AddMachines command

  28. Balance Workloads • The data center went from one four hypervisors to handle the additional load • Additional Hypervisors were started to maintain the pool of two standby • Click the Configure button and select the Demo Load command

  29. The Demo command adds load on hypervisor 03 and the CPU utilization spikes past the upper limit of 70%

  30. VMs are migrated away from host 03 to balance the workload • VMs are started on the standby host and another host is powered on to maintain the two host Standby pool

  31. Manage Workloads • Put a host into Maintenance mode • The running VMs are automatically migrated and load balanced on other hosts • To put the host into maintenance mode, click the Actions button and select the Enter Host Maintenance command

  32. The VMs running on host 03 are automatically migrated and load balanced on other hosts • Additional host is started and put into standby mode to main the pool of two

  33. Protect Workloads • Select the Configure button and select the DemoPFA command to create a PFA • Click the Alarm icon to see the nature of the error • The system will automatically migrate and balance the VMs on other hosts • The automatic VM migration is a function of the High Availability policy. If a host crashes or losses power the HA policy will re-parent the VMs onto other hosts
