  1. High volume low pressure spray equipment • HLVP spraying systems are light, mobile and easy to clean, and they can produce a high quality job in a short time. • Health and safety is vital when spray painting. You must use the correct PPE, prepare the site well and check all equipment. What PPE do you need when spray painting?

  2. Starting off <Insert Figure 15.1> There are many types of HLVP spray gun, but typically the coating is held in a pressure vessel and fed in using compressed air.

  3. Types of spray gun There are a variety of types of spray gun: HVLP spray gun system Airless spray gun Air spray gun What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type of spray gun?

  4. Preparing areas for spraying Overspray is one of the main disadvantages of spray painting. Your preparation needs to be meticulous if you are to avoid overspray problems. How would you explain what the term ‘bounce back’ means? <Insert Figure 15.2 – Bounce back>

Masking • A range of materials will help protect surfaces from being damaged, including: • polythene sheeting, dustsheets, masking paper • hardboard, corrugated plastic, cardboard • polythene bags, masking tape • specialist spray shields • How would you protect the items in the illustration? <Insert Figure 15.4 – Items to protect>

  6. Applying water-borne coatings <Insert Figure 15.6 – Spraying correctly/incorrectly> • Make sure that: • the paint is at the right viscosity • you follow the manufacturer’s instructions • everything is kept clean • you have the proper training • you get the spraying action right!

Cleaning and storing equipment • If you have used water-based coatings: • flush with water then mineral spirits • leave the pump (machine) gun and hose filled with mineral spirits • shut off and unplug the sprayer • turn pressure relief prime valve to ‘prime’ • return prime valve to spray position <Insert Figure 15.6 – Spraying correctly/incorrectly> Why should you turn the pressure relief prime valve to ‘prime’?
