  3. About Bridgewater (source Wikipedia) Population 1980 Census: 29,1751990 Census: 32,5092000 Census: 42,940 • Bridgewater is a relatively large, mostly affluent suburban township located in the center of Somerset County. The thirty-three square mile area which is now the Township of Bridgewater was originally purchased from a local Lenape Native American tribe. Bridgewater was chartered by George II of Great Britain in 1749, and incorporated as one of New Jersey's 104 original townships in 1798. It is named after the town of Bridgewater in the English county of Somerset. • Tradition holds that it was at the Middlebrook encampment that the first official flag of the United States was unfurled, after a law to adopt a national flag had been passed by Congress on June 14, 1777. By special order of Congress, a Thirteen Star Flag is flown 24 hours a day at the Washington Camp Ground, part of the former Middlebrook encampment, in Bridgewater. Since 1889, the first hoisting of the flag is commemorated annually each July 4 with a changing of the flag, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and the delivery of an historical address. • Until recently, Bridgewater was known as a farming town. In the 1970s its population began to grow when residents of larger cities such as Plainfield and Newark started to migrate into Bridgewater. Subsequently, Bridgewater started to receive an influx of residents who worked in the strong pharmaceutical, telecommunications and financial industries in Bridgewater and the Raritan Valley. More recently, there has also been growth as Bridgewater has become more popular with New York City commuters who use Bridgewater Station on New Jersey Transit's Raritan Valley Line or Interstate 78 East to commute to New York City. • Bridgewater is now a fairly developed suburban community, with few traces of its rural past still evident in the town (particularly in its northwestern section). Bridgewater is now Somerset County's second-most populous municipality, after Franklin Township.

  5. Geography • According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 32.5 square miles (84.3 km²), of which, 32.5 square miles (84.0 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.28%) is water. • While much of Bridgewater has relatively flat terrain, the northeastern portion of the township is very hilly, with the First Ridge of the Watchung Mountains (sometimes known as the First Watchung Mountain) passing through the township. Additionally the Second Ridge (Second Mountain) passes just north of the township border (except where Somerville and Raritan were carved out as separate boroughs) and the North Branch of the Raritan River forms the township's western border with Branchburg. The North Branch and South Branch of the Raritan River meet at the extreme southwestern corner of Bridgewater at the border with both Branchburg Township and Hillsborough Township, and this point known as the Raritan River Confluence was once intended to be a major reservoir. • Bridgewater borders 13 other municipalities. Its longest borders are with Branchburg Township, Bedminster, Bernards Township, Warren Township, Bound Brook, Somerville and Raritan. It also borders Green Brook (though connected only by Route 22), Middlesex (though connected only by one local street), South Bound Brook (a very short border in the middle of the Raritan River, Franklin Township (the only street connection is Interstate 287), Manville (the only street connection is Finderne Avenue, a county highway), and Hillsborough (no direct street connection.) Bridgewater Township's ZIP Code is 08807, with 08836 used in the community of Martinsville, and 08805 used in the Thomae Park section (mailing address of Bound Brook NJ). Bridgewater's area codes are 908 and 732.

  8. Zoning • The zoning enforcement office is located in the lower level of the municipal building. The office hours are from 12 - 5 PM. The office reviews construction application permits. It also issues utility shed (100 square feet or less) permits along with patio, fence, and gazebo permits. Questions regarding construction of additions, decks, and driveways should be referred to zoning, as well as questions on snow removal from sidewalks.Property owners and tenants are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks. Snow may not be moved to a cleared public roadway due to public safety concerns. Please refer to Chapter 182, SNOW AND ICE REMOVAL of the municipal code for more information. • The zoning officer conducts field investigations. Land use and ordinance violations are two of the areas routinely brought to his attention. Complaints often include inoperable or unregistered vehicles. Complaints made by residents are recorded and investigated. Occasionally, summonses are issued and the offenders are required to appear in court. • Attention: All Real Estate Agents - under our ordinance, "For Sale" signs are limited to the listed property only. Any "Open House" or directional signs off the property are allowed for the day of the open house only. • All Planning and Board of Adjustment application questions are referred to the planning office. • The Zoning Officer, George Jones, can be reached at (908) 725-6300 ext. 5541, or by email at zoning@bridgewaternj.gov. • HOME OCCUPATIONS • Chapter 126-368 to view the ordinance on Home Occupations. • Fence Guidelines • All fences require a Zoning Permit issued at the zoning office. Permit requires a survey showing the fence location and a picture or specifications of the style of fence. An inspection of the completed fence is only made if a complaint is made with the zoning office. The permit is free. Maximum fine for erecting a fence without a permit may be $1,000.00. • A fence is a structure. It cannot be over six feet in height. Either side of the fence can face either direction. When allowed along a property line it can be placed right along the line. No part of the fence, hole, or concrete may by over the line. Any fence placement that may violate a property line becomes a civil issue and the township does not arbitrate any dispute. Any fence placed along a wall along a property line cannot be higher then six feet on both sides measured at ground level. • Any landscaping along any property line may augment privacy with no regulation. • Solid Fence • Cannot be along any property line unless property has a variance. • Solid fence is described as open less then 50% of the fabric of the fence. • 3 inch picket is less then 1 ½ inch opening. • 2 inch picket is less then 1 inch opening. • Maximum six feet in height. • Must be located in proper setback for the zone the property is in. • Cannot be placed in front yard setback. Corner lots have two front yards.

  9. Zoning - continued • Sheds - Gazebos All sheds require a permit. Application must include a survey locating the shed and a picture or specification sheet of the shed. The Zoning Permit is free. •  Sheds-100 SF or less (Zoning Permit) • Maximum height 9 ½ ft. • R-20.1 R-10, R-10 A-B minimum distance to property line is three (3) feet.(126-308) • All other zones the minimum distance to side and rear property line is ten (10) feet. • Follow manufacturer’s guidelines for footing or foundation requirements. • Cannot be placed in front yard. • Sheds and Gazebos between 100 and 200 SF require a zoning permit. • This is an accessory structure (maximum two per lot). • Requires a standard building permit. • Locate on your survey within setback for that zone. • Taxed • Maximum height at peak is 10 ft. Height is measured as an average of the four corners at finished grade. • No utilities allowed without proper building permit. • Follow manufacturer’s guidelines for footing or foundation requirements. • Sheds- Gazebos over 200 SF or more require a building permit. • Patios and Retaining Walls • Patio permits require a survey locating the patio and showing the area in square feet. That area is subject to the total improved coverage of a lot according to the zoning chart for that zone. Patios cannot be closer then five (5) feet to a side or rear property line. Retaining walls require a permit. The height of the wall is the distance it must stay from a property line. An example is a two-foot wall must remain a minimum of two feet from property line. The application requires the wall be located on a survey. Patios and retaining walls that are part of a building permit like for a pool do not require a separate Zoning Permit. Retaining walls over four (4) feet require a building permit. The code office inspects them. 126-308.1, 126-308, 126-339, a-c
