In Week 4 of our Earth Science series, we delve into the fascinating realms of earth science, astronomy, and meteorology. Learn about the study of our planet, the universe, and the atmosphere. Explore geology by identifying landforms on Earth, and bring winter magic to life by creating beautiful crystal snowflakes. Follow our easy procedure involving boiling water, pipe cleaners, and borax for a fun hands-on experiment. Prepare to be amazed by the wonders of crystallization and the science behind it!

Brought to you by Research Organization Texas Academy of Math and Science University of North Texas WEEK 4: Earth science
What is earth science? • The study of the earth • What do the colors represent?
What is astronomy? • Study of the universe • Halley’s comet!
What is Meteorology? • Study of the atmosphere
What is geology? • Study of the earth’s surface • What are some landforms on Earth’s surface?
Crystal snowflakes • Problem – I really miss the snow and as a result I want to make snowflake ornaments!
Crystal Snowflakes Procedure • Begin to boil water • Create shape with pipe cleaner • Tie pipe cleaner shape to popsicle stick using string • Carefully pour hot water into plastic bottle • Mix ¼ cup of borax into hot water • Add food coloring (optional) • Carefully place pipe cleaner shape into the bottle • Wait overnight for crystallization
But how? • Super saturation • Pipe Cleaner in the solution acts as a rough surface that the borax can attach to • Creates crystals on the pipe cleaner
