  3. Background Info • One of the oldest nations - goes back 1000s of years from before Islam spread during the time of Khalifah Uthman • Mahmoud Ghaznawi was the Sultan of Afghanistan - controlled Iran, spread Islam to Tajikistan, Pakistan, India - never lost a war. Famous for destroying idols

  4. Modern History • 1747 - Afghan tribes united for the first time under the leadership of Ahmad Shah Durrani • 1800s - Anglo-Afghan Wars • 1919 - Independence • 1979 - Soviet Invasion • 1997 - Taliban controls 2/3 of Afghanistan • 2001 - ???
