  1. All Quiet on the Western Front Amanda Hanshew, Sydney Scripture, Kyle Nock, and Valerie Janton

  2. In this section of this chapter, all the soldiers are on leave. When they all arrive home, they find that there has been a draft for soldiers. Paul is visiting Mittelstaedt in the barracks. “Mittelstaedt has some news ready for me that electrifies me on the spot. He tells me Kantorek has been called up as a territorial. When the soldiers were still in school, Kantorek always told them they should go to war. He portrayed war as a wonderful thing, it was a beautiful adventure. He told them they need to be nationalists and go to war to fight for their country. Now that Kantorek has been drafted, he now has to experience all the hardships of the war. 1. What is happening in this specific part of the chapter?

  3. 2. What is the theme of this section? This chapter excerpt portrays the theme of abusive authority figures. Kantorek is looked at as abusive because he forced his students to go into war. Kantorek believes that the young men should go into the war because it shows nationalism and it is the right thing to do for their country. Paul recalls, “During drill-time Kantorek gave us long lectures until the whole of our class went, under his shepherding, to the District Commandment and volunteered.” Kantorek did not give the men a choice. He made every one of them go, even if they did not volunteer. Even though Joseph Behm, a student, was scared to go to war, “He did allow himself to be persuaded, otherwise he would have been ostracized.” Kantorek forced the scared, young men to go fight for their country.

  4. This excerpt shows that Paul feels more mature and powerful over authority. In this excerpt Kantorek is being drafted into war. “Mittelstaedt has some news ready for me that electrifies me on the spot. He tells me Kantorek has been called up as a territorial ” (Remarque). Paul feels more powerful over Kantorek because he has already been through war. When in school, Kantorek used to control over Paul and his friends, but now Paul has control over Kantorek in the war. 3. What does this excerpt show about Paul’s mindset?
