ALMA Early Science Preparation Tutorial Overview and Resources
This tutorial provides an introduction to the North American ALMA Science Center (NAASC) and its resources for astronomers preparing for ALMA Early Science proposals. It covers the role of NAASC, recent updates on ALMA capabilities, and important deadlines. An extensive walkthrough of the Observing Tool and introduction to simdata are included, along with a Q&A session. Participants will learn about proposal writing, instrument capabilities, and accessing support resources. Visit http://science.nrao.edu/alma for more details and assistance.

ALMA Early Science Preparation Tutorial • Kartik Sheth • NAASC CSV Liaison • ALMA/NRAO
Plan for this brief tutorial • The Role of North American ALMA Science Center (5 mins) • Brief update on ALMA & ES capabilities (5 mins) • Timeline for users / Important Dates / Helpdesk (5 mins) • Walk through demo of the Observing Tool (25mins) • Introduction to simdata(20 mins) • Q &A (15minutes)
The North American ALMA Science Center • Main resource for ALMA users • http://science.nrao.edu/alma start here
The North American ALMA Science Center • Services include: • Supporting community preparation of ALMA proposals • Providing post-observation user support • Maintaining ALMA websites, proposal & data reduction guides • Organizing ALMA meetings / workshops • Visiting institutions to give presentations on ALMA • Supporting Commissioning and Science Verification efforts
See Primer for more detailed information on ALMA (ES vs. Full, ES science examples, basics of interferometry
ALMA Early Science • Early Science proposals with LIMITED capability (compared to full ALMA) • See Pre-announcement released yesterday! • 16 x 12m antennas • Bands 3, 6, 7 and 9 available (see mousepad/primer for reference) • Limited correlator setups available (see primer) • 250m baselines (~ 0.4” at 0.5mm, 2.4” at 3mm) • NOTE: 16 ants = limited UV coverage so careful with imaging projects • Large surveys, large maps may be difficult in ES • See ES examples in the primer
Your Path for using ALMA for ES- I • Generating Science Ideas / Getting to Know ALMA • NRAO website, mousepad, primer • AAS special sessions, NAASC Science workshops, community events days, tutorials • Writing a proposal • ALMA Observing Tool (walk-through here) • Calculator, Splatalogue • Simdata(walk-through here) • Helpdesk
Helpdesk Linked from: http://science.nrao.edu/alma/
Your Path for using ALMA for ES - II • Future NAASC-sponsored tutorials will cover steps 3 & 4 • Getting the data (and re-processing it) • ALMA Observing tool (Phase II) • Project tracker • ALMA Science Archive • CASA & Pipeline • Visiting the NAASC • Publicizing Results • Page charges (standard NRAO policy) • NRAO EPO Office
