SILK The main fabric of this dress is silk. Facts about silk: • Silk is a natural product made from the cocoon of the silkworm • It is very expensive as silk worms are quite small, so the amount of silk they produce is quite small • Silk is a very smooth, delicate fabric.
The History of Silk • Silk worms have been bred in China for more than 4000 years! • The idea of making a cloth from the filaments of the silkworm’s cocoon originated in China in about 2600 BC! Sogdian silk, Made in the 8th century
How is silk made? Commercial silk priduction is know as sericulture. In the wild, when the silk moth hatches from its silk cocoon, it breaks the fibres of the cocoon meaning the silk cannot be spun. In the commercial silk inducstry, the silk worms are killed before they hatch. A silk worm
