Aral Sea • Located in Southwest Asia • In 1960 it was one of the 4 largest lakes in the world with a thriving fishing industry. • The Soviet Union diverted the feeder rivers to irrigate cotton crops. • By 2007 the sea had declined to 4 smaller lakes only 29 ft. Deep. • People who had lived on the shore were now up to 150 miles away from the water. • Restoration efforts have made some improvements but it won’t ever be the same. • Considered one of the greatest ecological disasters on the planet.

  5. Take a good look at the gallon of water. How many gallons do you think you would use to:Wash your hands? Brush your teeth? Take a shower? Take a bath? Flush the toilet? Get a drink? Wash the dishes? Water the lawn? Wash the car?

  6. Think about how much one gallon really is. How many gallons of water do you think you use each day? Make a hypothesis.

  7. On average, Americans use 80-100 gallons/person each day. How does this compare with your hypothesis?
