  2. Bellringer: • Have you ever tried to dupe or pull a fast one on one of your parents? Explain. • Recall an event where you were proud to call your parents “yours.”

  3. Define the word “alleged” by reading several paragraphs on page 120. • Why does McPhee allege that several things have occurred? • What do these “alleged” events have in common? • Why do you feel that he has forgotten these moments?

  4. Why was McPhee “spoiled with protectionism?” What is funny about the “assertion he cannot confirm or confute?” • Define confute using context clues.

  5. What event took place in the winter of 1941? • Explain why this event is more vivid and powerful than the other assertions? • How does dialogue enhance this particular event? • Mrs. McPhee repeated a proverb on several occasions. What is it, and translate it into your own words.
