  2. Agenda Audience Check Introduction to BDD 2007 Lite Touch Core Configuration Using Lite Touch to deploy Windows XP and Windows Vista BDD 2007 Database and Automation Notes from the Field…

  3. Audience Check • Familiarity with Windows Deployment is assumed • This is a technical session • We only have 75 minutes • Please save your questions for Q&A at the end

  4. What Is BDD 2007? • End-to-end guidance, best practices, and toolsfor efficient planning, building, and deploying Windows and the Microsoft Office system • Based on real-world experience and industrybest practices • Increase automation • Decrease costs Manual Deployment $500 - $1000 per PC Fully Automated Less than $100 per PC

  5. What Is BDD 2007? • Let the “Feature Teams” guide you • New version - BDD 2007 SP1 • Released as a full product • Released as a patch to update existing installation • Office 2007 deployment guidance • Updated documentation • Detailed project plans

  6. BDD 2007 New Features • MMC 3.0–based management console • Replaces HTA application from BDD 2.5 • Improved driver management • For Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE), Windows Vista, and Windows XP • Driver grouping for use during deployment • Inject drivers based on Plug and Play (PnP) ID • Task sequence-based – we use the standalone task sequencer from SCCM • Database support for Lite Touch

  7. BDD 2007 Requirements • Windows PE 2.0 requires 512 MB RAM • Flat image can be used for 256 MB RAM • Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) • Lite Touch is using Windows PE 2.0 • Zero Touch is using Windows PE 2004/2005

  8. Lite Touch Scenarios • Deployment without management infrastructure • Manually initiated • Uses network share, Windows Deployment Services, CD/DVD, or USB • Refresh, upgrade, replace, new computer

  9. The Distribution Share • Why use the structure from BDD 2007? • It’s a good (if not great) starting point • IT professional awareness is good • Documented and well-tested structure • Is it that easy? • No, you do need to know about Windowsdeployment and driver handling • But, we have done most of the hard work 

  10. demo The Distribution Share

  11. Sysprep Internals (Windows XP) • Adding mass storage device drivers • Hardware detection and injectingdrivers at deployment time • Important hotfixes • Audio Drivers: KB 888111 • Video Drivers: KB 883667 • PCI Express: KB 890463

  12. demo Driver Management

  13. Lite Touch Automation • We can make this process almost Zero-touch • Hiding wizard screens • Pre selecting applications to deploy • Image selection • The BDD Database • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or 2005 • BDD by default is using Named Pipes • Modify deployment based on geographic location,Make-Model,Role,MAC address

  15. Notes from the Field... • Remember the 512 MB RAM requirement • Windows PE 2.0 partitioning bug • WAIK component bug – collection modified errors • Operating System List not refreshed

  16. Windows PE 2.0 Überbug • Bug valid for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 deployments • New diskpart partitioning routine conflictswith certain BIOS code • Solution #1: Apply hotfix 931760 / 931761 • Solution #2: Change WinPE 2.0 partitioning [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\VDS\ALIGNMENT] "LessThan4GB"=dword:00000000 "Between4_8GB"=dword:00000000 "Between8_32GB"=dword:00000000 "GreaterThan32GB"=dword:00000000

  17. WAIK Component Bug • So you make the perfect Image • Image is sysprep’ed and you add to the BDD workbench • Workbench presents and error as shown below System.InvalidOperationException: Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute • Latest hotfixes for Vista cause WAIK to duplicate Internet explorer sections
